So I'm picking up my M4 tomorrow as a daily driver. I already have 458 Spider as my pleasure vehicle. I recently lowered my Spider with Novitec springs and added wheel spacers. Very happy with the setup. I explored lowering the factory springs but it would only be 19mm, which was not enough.

So I go to BMW M4 forum to register and become a member and asked if you could lower the M4 with factory springs. When I join this forum I knew the audience would be a bunch of teens and kids in their 20s. So I didn't expect much. I asked a simple question. Boy was I blowned away with some of their responses. Here are some responses:

"My friend, you need so much help, im not even sure where to begin. I would start with lots and lots of google."

"Uh I hope you mean shocks. If you really mean springs, I'd have to agree with the guy above me. If you do mean shocks, yes you can lower your car and retain the stock shocks."

"I really hope he meant shocks."

The first one was bad. The other 2 I didn't mind too much. The maturity and mindset of these kids makes me shake my head. I think I will stay on this forum from now on.

That's what you get for getting a kids car. Why not look into the mclaren 570s as a daily driver.

Because I don't want to spend $200+K for a daily driver.

trust me you will regret getting the m4, especially when you see 20 a day on the road with the average age of 25

Yes I am in my early 30s but I also feel the mental maturity of the m3/4 forum takes some patience to go through. There was one post about how somebody spent 95k on a m3 but a few people just kept criticizing the owner for not getting led headlights.

If u go to that forum and u aren't waxing lyrical about the M4 being the second coming, u are in for a rough ride. Compare the M4 with anything with wheels that move and not giving the M4 the absolute victory, u are in for it too. Stay away from that sub forum.

Seems unfortunate that two of the responses in this very thread were equally unhelpful and short-sighted. I test drove an M4, seemed great fun. If I remember rightly it had no full-auto option for the gearing, which I thought was a bit weird. Everything else was great. Dealer riding with me had had a personality bypass though.

The BMW forum recently helped me find s dealer that would give me 9% off a new build X5m when my local dealer offered $500 off because the x5m is a "limited car". Coming from Ferrari land I nearly wet myself laughing to hear "limited" and BMW in the same sentence. Granted probably not too many 20 somethings want an SUV but with me in my early 40s with two kids I need an SUV and the BMW m product is pretty great. I actually like the M4 as I had until recently the last gen v8 M3 convertible. I'm sure it's a good daily although I prefer my 991TTS as a daily.

I chose the M4 as my daily and not 991TT or any Porsche is b/c I need the 2 back seats to take my kids to activities. I have 4 kids so if I need to take all 4 then it's all in the Escalade:) The 3 older ones can ride in the M4 and mom can stay home:)

I agree that the M4 is more for kids in 20s (if they can afford it) and 30s. I still consider myself in my 30s in mindset (although I'm officially 43:)). M4 is a great car for the value and performance. Of course it doesn't even come close to my 458 Spider in terms of styling, performance and passion.

There are plenty of m3/4 enthusiasts that are also open to other cars unlike some people on the m3/4 forums. The m community has nice events such as m pact, bimmerfest etc.

Thanks for the heads up. I just added a 2016 M4 convertible to the stable last week. I'll stay away from mentioning that to avoid all the added weight comments.

Of course, I have the opposite situation to yours: my 458 top doesn't drop ;).

Life's short. Buy what you like and do what you want with it.

My 458 is Bianca, and the new M4 is Yasmin.

Can you guess their respective colors? :)

I don't think it's fair to judge an entire BMW community based on a few bad apples; it looks like some of them were helpful and actually answered the question that was posted. There are pricks on every forum.

BMW forums for the most part are like that. Arrogance and ignorance in abundance.

If you need any assistance or guidance with your M4, I'm happy to assist.

We have built several here, and currently have an F80 M3 that belongs to an employee and is our Agency Power project car. I have an M5 as well.

Ferrarichat is quite unique in the forum world. Everyone gets along for the most part and there's no real drama. The same can be said for the most part about GTRlife, which I also represent for us.

My TTS has four seats. It's the GT3/RS that's only two which is the same reason I went with the turbo s. Plus it's AWD so I put winter tires on from Nov-may and I can truly drive all year long (rain or snow).

Spend some time at benzworld, it's not much better there, EXCEPT it's guys popping $20K for a used benz arguing about the cheapest way to fix an expensive car.

Actually had a guy ask what the lug size was for his car, and then bristle when someone also reminded him to torque them properly when he swaps them on his car, by providing the torque number.

I dunno, the guys here can be equally ****ty. I've seen plenty of noobs here get their asses handed to them for asking a reasonable question.

Oh, and the M4, good for you! Drive what you like. DD should be zippy and reliable, the M4 does both.

Glad you picked up the car; enjoy it.

Not to defend the M4 forum too much, but there is a certain tone to the BMW community and M elitist... They could have been nicer, but the responses were probably driven by confusion. The M3/4 do not have adjustable coil over shocks/struts, i.e., adjustable perches, that would allow you to adjust the ride height with the stock springs. So, I think they were somewhat pointing that out and unfortunately very sarcastically. To answer your question, you would need to replace the springs to lower the car.

I'm in my mid-30's, and don't see the M4 as a kids car. The price point is still relatively outside most 20/30 year olds. Also, as most of us on this forum are fortunate/ blessed, depending on perspective, to have more disposable income to allow the purchase of higher end vehicles. For most, a $75K M3/4 or any other car in that price point is a pinnacle of achievement that highlights they have arrived at some level and they're proud of it. I do agree, the BMW community can be a bit arrogant and sometimes downright pretentious. However, overall it's a pretty good community. Also, don't give up on the forum, it's a great resource and fairly easy to search for information.

Most owners modify their cars, so if you're contemplating something chances are someone has tried it and you can learn from their costly/ successful experience. I'm also happy to help where I can.

Dealer actually rode with you? Ha! When I was thinking about buying my new 2012 Maserati GranTurismo, the dealer let me take the car home for the weekend. "Try to bring it back some time on Monday", he said.

    Thank You! I said.

How is the M4 a "kids car"? And why does it matter if you see a lot of other M4's on the road, does that make your M4 worse somehow?

Sounds like you had a similiar experience as the OP only 20 times worse and haven't let it go yet.

I just picked up an M2 with manual transmission two days ago. It's a downright hoot. Don't plan on modifying it. I'm sure I'm older than the average buyer but that doesn't really matter. Gotten a bunch of 👍 from the younger and older crowds. It's not a limited production car so I'm sure I'll see 20 a day in a few months. Should be fun nodding to all the other owners.
