Can a car door remote work without a battery? Do they have little capacitors that would make them work for a while with no battery?

Or is my daughter lying about dropping the remote, putting the back back on and not realizing the battery was missing?

My remote stopped working today, I popped it open to check the battery and it was missing. Daughter denies an incident. Very strange. Working fine yesterday for me....

Daughter was driving my car while her Scion is awaiting an oil filler cap.

Very unlikely. It would take a pretty big capacitor to stay charged and send out enough energy to activate the door opener. It takes milliwatts of energy to send out a radio signal versus microwatts to keep a watch or LCD going while you change the battery over. There's not much reason to spend money to have a big capacitor in a garage door remote, so it wouldn't get put in.
