I purchased my car with the A/C pump rebuilt in a box and a second box of all the studs/bolts/washers. I've heard that it is important to document the locations of the specific spacers/washers so it can be put back the way it came out. I don't have that luxury. I was wondering if anyone here did this themselves and wrote the information on a piece of paper they may still have. In my dream world 3 or 4 of you will have this and I can see if there is consistency to get me going in the right direction. My service will be taking place the first two weeks of March so I'm just trying to get all my prep work done in advance. Thanks for your help.

I ask for help but forget the most important part. 1987 Mondial 3.2. I expect identical to 328, maybe even 308 but I don't know that for sure.

Thanks Paul, I will be referring to that. I guess I could modify my question a bit and this would go more to memory than saving scraps of paper on other folks part. Are the spacers behind the pump that I hear mentioned on other threads mostly installed to equal thicknesses or are there enough irregularities that the shims are different to every vehicle. I only bring it up as in various 30K threads when people remove the a/c pump to do the belts there is usually a disclaimer to be very careful to document where the washers/shims are located to get them in the right places so the pump is aligned properly with it's drive pulley.

    Thanks again.

The (upper) shims that give everyone grief are item 6 in this SPC figure:

    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=2293

Ferrari got a little too smart IMO, and slotted them like camber shims so that they can be installed/removed with the compressor "hanging" in place by the upper nuts (which, on the downside, lets them fall out if anything get loose and during disassembly) -- better to use stacks of round flat washers IMO so that they stay on the studs during assembly/disassembly (and if anything gets a little loose). On the lower side bracket, this picture only shows 1 flat washer (item 4) on the lower studs, but no reason you can't add more if necessary.

If the upper bracket is way, way out-of-square, you could use different total thicknesses on each stud to keep the AC compressor pulley in-plane with the crankshaft pulley, but this is the exception -- most times, the total thicknesses of all the upper shims should be equal and the total thicknesses of all the lower shims should be equal.

My '88 3.2 Mondial has a different mounting that what Steve has shown above (which may be for 328??). My car had a single mounting bracket hanging from the top, with four spider legs branching out, each to a corner of the "top" of the pump. The bracket was mounted to the engine with a pivot bolt and an adjustable bolt (to tension the belt). Perhaps the 3.2 mondial mounting is different than a 328??

In any case, it's a tough thing to remove and replace. Of course, the pump lines get in the way of various bolts, and the opposing bolts (you'll see these) can't come out (thereby releasing the pump) with the pump in place - you have to remove the bracket first. It ain't easy unfortunately....

Mine took 2 slotted shims per bolt but mine were on top(80 GTBi) but I siliconed mine together and it made no difference in the alignment and a little stickie can go along way. The amount of shims; is that different because of new and used belts? I put on a new belt and it does seem a little tight.

When I did the major on my 328, I actually measured the thickness of all the washers at AC mounting location, they turned out the be the same but I decided to label independently just in case. After installing the AC belt and tightening things up, I did a visual check of the belt to see if it was out-of-plane.

Thanks all, I had the feeling that the shims might be different at different spots but it sounds like equal thickness of shims at each mount point. I'll give it my best shot and use a straight edge to make sure it is properly aligned to the crank, sounds like that should do it.
