If it's the same as a 99, under the knob is a collar that screws off revealing a hex set screw.

Correct.... below the leather knob is a silver collar. The collar unscrews and drops down the shaft and will expose a small allen screw.. unscrew and lift.

    cool. was wondering about this.

anybody know where to get one of the polished metal knobs that fit this (preferrably in the USA)?

...and does it burn the heck out of your hand in the summer heat or is it ok?

I have a metal knob like that on my Testarossa, and at least in the SC summers it does get hot enough to burn your hand if the car's been in the sun.

In Dallas last summer I kept a clean sock in the car to put on the shift knob to drive it after parking it in the sun... otherwise I would have OMOM melted into my palm.

I´ve removed the nob but noticed that the lever has a thick metal sleeve on it that is about 5 inches. How do I remove that? The new round nob is not going to cover it.
