Sorry for the newbie questions, I tried to do a search and couldn't find the answers. I removed the smog pump on my 83 308 qv as it was bad and there was no belt or pulley or anything. Is there anything else that needs to be done to keep it from harming my engine other than removing the pump? Also, I noticed a little oil seems to be coming out around shaft where pulley was and is blowing on the distributor cap. Is there a seal that needs to be replaced or a cover for the shaft?

Try searching "308 air pump removal". You'll come up with several threads that discuss this issue extensively, including some with really good pictures, including a few that I posted. You should seriously consider removing the air injectors from the exhaust ports, as discussed in a couple of those threads, and putting a proper plug in there. Also, consider taking out all the associated plumbing to the air injection system, if it hasn't been removed yet. And especially make sure you don't have any open or dangling vacuum lines. Vacuum leaks are not good.

As for the pulley, you can simply leave it on the end of the camshaft. There is a thread on removing the pulley and the extension it rides on, but that's really not necessary. Just leave it there, it won't bother anyone.

And the seal at the end of the exhaust cam can be a bit of a PITA to change, as you need to pull the cam cover and mess with the cam shafts. If you are going that far, consider changing all of the cam seals on that bank, since the others will probably end up leaking once you disturb the existing set-up. IMHO, leave the seals alone until you are ready to do a timing belt service, unless it's really pouring out of that seal.

p.s. If you don't have them, download the 308 QV parts and service manuals and print them out. The parts manual has exploded views of how everything goes together. Makes it easy to visualize the way things are put together. The service manual is helpful for certain things, but I find the parts manual to be a better source of information in most instances.

Don, if you ever need to sell your car, a California buyer will need/want the pump and smog equipment to be on the car. If the belt is off then it's not sucking any hp...it just looks a bit ugly in the engine compartment...

Be careful removing the air injection plumbing that attaches to the heads, those parts rust and get stuck in the heads, if you try to remove them and they break off, then the engine will have to be pulled if anyone ever wants to restore it to smog legal status, and if you ever want to sell the car to someone in calif, then the smog stuff will have to be reinstalled.

I know, I had to do to my 308, to convert it back to the California legal configuration.

Keep all the smog parts. As mentioned above, California buyers will need to have the system installed. I had all pumps and pipes and nozzles removed and put the plugs in the exhaust. The engine revs so much easier. When you look at the cross section of the air injection nozzle in the exhaust outlet, it is easy to understand why. Plus if you leave everything in place it will slowly rot due to the exhaust gases. Highly recommend you take care of removing the whole system rather than just disabling the pumps.

I have no intentions of selling the car any time soon, but I keep all the bits and pieces because you just never know what the future holds. Maybe some guy from California will want to buy my car for $100K. Maybe my state will start requiring smog junk on my car again... yikes! Anyway, it's good to keep that stuff.
