Hi, Does anyone have any experience of removing the fuel sender unit from the tank? Mine continually under reads or gets stuck, which is usually when the car has been standing over winter. Clearly draining the tank is likely to be required, but its not clear if the silver collar is threaded to hold the unit in the tank, therefore is it a case of unwinding it? I replaced my fuel sending unit recently due to the fuel gauge showing 1/4 full despite filling the tank. You need to completely drain the tank and remove the unit as it is threaded into the fuel tank. make sure you have the car on a lift as the unit is very long and car needs to be high off the ground to replace it. There is a special tool that I used to remove the unit. It came with the new unit I bought from Nick Skidmore in the UK
I would just say, whatever you think is in the tank when you come to drain it, double it. I thought mine was almost completely dry, guage on empty, red light on for ages etc. so I thought I had ample containers ready, but in the event there was much more fuel in there than I thought and for a few moments started panicking that I would spill fuel everywhere. I just about got away with it.
I did mine on my 348 - plenty of pics here: https://www.clubscuderia.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/348-diy-restoration.45388/page-136#post-847509 +1 on the draining the tank - make sure one of your other cars is low on fuel too so you have somewhere to put the extra fuel - one jerry can won't suffice!
Make sure you have ample as in a LOT of ventilation. And be prepared to perform the swap in a short period of time not needed to keep the tank open for an extended time. Even with the tank drained you will have an impressive amount of gas fumes. And you will smell of them too!
