Can anyone tell me what tool you would use to get the lock ring out of the 355 Master Cylinder in this picture? It doesn't have the normal tabs or holes where a pair of ring pliers could grip it.

T Rutlands was going to try to put together a rebuild kit for them, but we can't get the lock ring out to pull the plunger and examine the seals.

    Thanks!

Would it be possible to drill 2 small holes and use the standard snap ring tool?

    Hello C.G.!

Can't help with the clip but PM me with an update on your 355 belt failure remediation. Besides, we need to get e-mail addresses updated. :)

That was our first idea, too, Verrell. In fact, on the right side of the photo you can see a little white spec in the center of the end of the ring where we tried to drill a pilot hole. I think Rutlands was concerned about overshooting the ring and damaging the part since it was mine.

We'll keep that as a last resort, but I can't imagine there isn't a 'proper' way to remove that thing...

Sure there is......you just need the proper tool sitting in the toolboxes at Marranello. :)

Also.....isnt that just a spacer/washer behind the snap ring. If you did drill, and went through, surely that would just 'push in' a little and maybe just mark the washer/spacer. After all, there is a spring behind it all, I dont think it would be damaged if you drilled through the snap ring and touched the washer behind it? :)

I have seen this done before on something similar

Dremel the edges as shown so that you can use a pair of internal circlip pliers on the edges that have been ground away.

    Good luck

    Paul
PS - Circlips are hardend - a hss drill will have mucho problemo- ask me how I know. :D

Either thin nosed mole grips to hold one side of the clip fast. Or use pair of screw drivers to press then together just enough to get a mate with a small jewellers screw driver into the gap produced behind the clip as the clip comes out of the grove. Once you have a screwdriver behind it you can get it out. The clips can take a pair of screw driver becourse to open them you just have to press down on each of the flat edge of the clips at the same time to get the gap behind.

You can use two pliers like the round end ones shown to grab at the two red lines on the left and work it out or you can use a dental drill to square off a notch like on the right and use the round end plier. Sometimes you can use the teeth of the flat plier shown which will gain just enough purchase to squeeze the snap ring in so you can remove it.

Those are all better ways than mine, which is to put the messy JB Weld coating on coat hanger ends to each side of the circlip, wait until dry, then squeeze.

Hey, somebody besides HuskerNtexas has to have a sense of humor around here!

You can do the same trick with JB Weld and an old allen wrench on a stuck/stripped bolt, too.

I laughed. I cried. It was better than Cats...
