Removed the coolant hose connecting thermostat housing to the radiator connecting pipe on the bulkhead. When refitting the new hose do i need to bleed the coolant system somehow?
When you removed the thermostat housing, did you not notice the bleed bolt on top of it? Thats the "somehow" A 10 mil socket is needed I believe, its quick and simple.
I'm not gonna bother with bleeding the system. The 355 has 2 hoses that run into the coolant tank which self bleed the system....so i've read anyways... Just hoping the new hose will not drip at the thermostat housing connection...the thick silicone hose one did and I could not stop it. Got to fit the hose by lying on my belly on top of the engine with the steering fluid tank pushed out of the way...not nice!
Why not just do the job correctly while you are there? It will take literally a few minutes to do. The bleed bolt is there for a reason, it's simple. Why ask the original question if you had no intention to do so? Your next posted question will be, my cars temprature has raised should I ignore it or check my tyre pressures?
Well, your point is well taken but given he did not drain the system and only removed one hose, is it really required to bleed in this case? Do you think he introduced any substantial amount of air into the system?
It's ok MCJoe ....jack and billie don't like me They aim sarcasm at most of my posts They think we're all experienced mechanics. I've only owned a socket set for 18 months...I don't know what i'm doing...this angers some folk. I don't even know when to open the bleed bolt if I even wanted to... Is it opened with motor running and fans switched on for instance?
There are two little hoses, one attached to the bottom of the thermostat housing, and the other attached to the cross-over pipe for the 2 radiators. Their purpose is to allow air to flow up to the coolant over flow tank. You simply turn the car on, leave the coolant cap off, run it until it is hot, top it up, and close the cap. There is no need for a bleed procedure.
Excellent info here. I never would have known this procedure if I hadn't of asked. Now I know and we all know the easy method of a quick coolant bleed on a 355. Certainly saves stretching across a hot engine trying to open and close a small essentially hidden screw as others suggested.
Ias Mitchell already said i also did not bleed when i did my engine out and just. Idled for a while topped up a few times. Also the over fflow is full when it is only about an inch from the bottom, which is about 3 inches from the top. This is the cold level. Do a search i think i have given yo pretty close numbers though. Good luck
