    Slight leak in my 1983 5 speed radiator.

    So far the hood is off, front grille off, hoses disconnected. Looks like I can unbolt the trans cooler and A/C condenser and support them and have just enough room to pull the radiator ONLY straight out. The trans cooler is on rubber standoffs and once those are removed gives the radiator just enough room to move towards the rear of the car to clear the top bolts.

    Anyone done this or know why it WON'T work??

    Would prefer not to drain the lines for the trans cooler and condenser if at all possible.

    Good, you're doing it with the hood removed :) I don't see why that wouldn't work.
    Btw, that's an engine oil cooler you've got...trans. coolers are for the auto. transmissions (located to the right of the oil cooler). I also hear that it's a bear to crack open those oil lines from the unit. :(

    Yeah of course-

    It does seem as though there is enough room to do it as long as I support both smaller radiators... I'll give it a shot...

    RemovIng the hood gives an entire new level of access to the the front of the engine compartment. I took my hood off to work on the A/C system. I spent more time masking the edges of the hood and hood opening than actually taking the hood off and putting it back on.

    Let me think, I think there are 8 bolts to get out the radiator. I did this without pulling the hood, but easier with the hood off I'm sure;
    1. remove the 4 bolts that hold the AC condenser (thru the grill).
    2. (2) rubber mounted 6mm nuts at the top right and left of the radiator inside the engine bay.
    3. (2) ~8mm mounts at the bottom of the radiator (rubber mounts to the frame).

    ...of course, in addition to the P/s reservoir and the oil coolers...Lee

    ...oh, but to your question; no reason to disconnect the coolers, the radiator will squeak by. This job went remarkably well, very few times do things go easier than expected...the hardest part was squeezing things out with the hood still on...Lee

    Yeah it was no big deal- Hung the engine oil cooler with some wire so it would not droop and supported the A/C condenser with a couple of clamps- Radiator did not want to move but once we got it to edge forward a bit it slipped right out- heavy beast!!

    While it's out for service I'm removing my heater manifold to try and get the heat levers to finally move freely in the car.

    Had a great driving season with the 400i- the more you drive these cars the better they are!

    I had that done three years ago and there was a lot of gunk in the heater section that got flushed out while the radiator was out. Had to replace the heat control lever as I apparently haven't used it as much as I should have over the years. Now I absent mindedly run it through its range whenever I take the car out for a drive, whether it is hot or cold out. The heater is nice and toasty now and came in handy during last year's snowless winter!
