Anybody know a good chemical that will melt away the undercoating junk they spray underneath 348s without taking the paint as well? I'm really tired of trying to use lacquer thinner. That junk is sprayed willy-nilly (technical term) into the subframe and looks like crap!

Hillbillys use a propane torch and a putty knife. Leave a thin coat on these cheapo 4re's rust!

Even if you spend big $ there is no best way to get the crap off. Sandblasting...you never get all the sand out of the nooks and cranies. Acid dip likewide and the acid will eat the car!

Try spraying on brake cleaner, it should work. It does dissolve the black undercoating which drips right off, and it won't affect paint; no wiping required.

Don't use lacquer thinner. That stuff will eat your paint. I use var-sol, a common mineral spirits paint thinner available anywhere. It cleans parts, removes tar and is not flammable like some others. Painted surfaces can be washed down with soap and water after cleaning. Hint. If used for cleaning paint brushes or parts. Decanting into empty wine or liquor bottles allows the paint or dirt to precipitate out and the var-sol can be used again.

+1 on the mineral spirits! However still exercise caution as it is flamable but not to the point that lacquer thinner or gas are. To speed up the wash & rinse process use alcohol as it will remove the oily residue left behind from the thinner and quickly evaporates leaving behind a clean surface. And do save that used thinner as described above, it can be used over & over again. It'll take a few days for the paint solids & dirt to settle to the bottom, after that carefully pour off the spirits to a clean container for reuse. It does take on a yellowish tinge when recycling but still very effective.

I'm glad to meet another cheap bastid. I keep separate bottles for parts, varnish, and paint. A Gallon of mineral spirits last me about five years. Thanks for the tip on the alcohol.

Vintage car magazines here recommend dry ice blasting. Completely removes anything without damaging the actual car parts. Even rubber hoses won't be damaged. Quite pricey, though...

I thought it was a great idea.
Only wanted to fill in on the other alternative if that process were needed in some other fashion.

You are right, not as flammable. Min spirits is actually not a flammable, but a combustible......needs a higher flash point.
