I am in the process of restoring the shiny look of my period-correct Momo wheels. I need to remove the clear coat to get down to the metal for polishing. The wheels have no major scars or pitting, just some ugly clear coat.

The question is: What is the best/easiest way to get the clear coat off of the alloy wheels? I have seen suggestions to carefully sand the clear coat away, but that is a labor intensive solution. Is there a product (solvent/paint remover/etc) that can be purchased to get this stuff off? Or is this a job for a dipper?

Is it clear on paint or clear on Aluminum.
My MOMOs are painted, like most, because the castings are soooooo crappy.
In that case, , sand with 600 end with a 1000 pad,,, respray with silver, sand, then clear.

If the wheels truely are covered in clear I would use paint remover instead of sandpaper.

I've done this several times but only on wheels that had polishable metal underneath. If you can see through the clear coat to the actual metal and it's smooth and shiny then you can just use paint remover and scrape it off with a credit card and a brillo pad. Follow with a buff with Mothers.

I've seen people who thought the paint underneath the clear coat was the actual metal and removed the clear coat only to have another layer of silver paint then remove the silver paint to a metal that can't be polished without heavy sanding/buffing.
