Any shortcuts on removing the center consol on my 1981 gtsi? I am redoing the entire interior and this is the last piece to come out. Thanks for the consideration.

Seats & rugs out you will see how the console is screwed down to the fiberglass floor. The fore part of the console will become separated easily from the main part when it's 4 screws are out. Then remove 2 screws in the ash tray which releases the main panel beneath the handbrake. Take lots of pictures along the way.

Don't forget to pull the park brake all the way up. On mine I had to really crank on it to get the console to slide up and over it.

I just finished my interior a few weeks ago. I unscrewed all the screws holding the main console down first (after removing the ashtray and shift gate).. Then lifted the console up a couple of inches to expose the area where the hand brake mechanism is attached to the brake cable. I got a pair of needle-nosed vice grips and clamped the e-brake cable close to the interior firewall to keep it from retracting. Then removed the cotter pin holding the brake handle to the cable end. Once the pin is loose the e brake handle can be moved about freely and the console comes off easily.

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the CRES (stainless) diaper cover and release all adjustment in the brake cable at the rear. That way the handbrake will come way up out of the way.

    That's a good one... (you're kidding right?).

I was talking about removing the cotter pin at the base of the handle (see illustration- #11), It was literally a 30 second job for me. By removing the pin, the handle moves freely with no cable interference. I've got a Euro car so your way could be easier for a US model. I dunno. :)

Howard, I hope all of our advice is helpful.

Is the best way to leave the handbrake lever free, in order to not interfere with the console. For all the rest is easy. Try to put some painter tape on all the console levers, and write in the name to identify each one in order to reassemble all the mess later easily.
I've just removed my center console to redye it; is a little bit tricky but not very difficult.

    My 2 cents

Not kidding since I have absolutely no access to anything above or below the brake handle except the few inches of chrome handle which protrudes from the leather. The console box covers it completely. Incidentally, when I removed my console, the handle wasn't a major issue, just requires holding your tongue just right and making a short grunt noise at the right time.

I guess that's one of the differences between a GTB and GTS. That's the beauty of this forum.. learn something new every day.
