Is there a special tool required to remove the clips that are on each end of the strut. I have tried prying the clips off with a small screw driver with no success.

They should pry right out. Try a little WD-40 or PB blaster. Be careful not to loose them although they are easily replaced.

lay a rag over the area then use your screwdriver to pop off the circlip. reinstall with visegrips. place circlip in slot and squeeze the pliers.

I've found the ones that are shaped like a horseshoe with two small holes very difficult to remove without damaging and difficult to place as well. The other type that look more c-shaped are easier to deal with. I got some at the local Kragen's and some from Daniel but noticed the other day that my local hardware store had a bunch of them(never thought to look there). Find some spares as they do get damaged. There must be a special tool for them but I have yet to locate it or figure out what it even is.

The horsehoe washers are called retaining rings or snap rings and cheap tools are available at harbor freight - http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=92374
