Hello, in preperation for our trip I'm in the process of swapping the York A/C compressor with a Sanden compressor. Looking at the engine compartment I can't help but think it would be a lot easier to take the hood off to improve access. It looks like the hood has a hinge on each side that is held on with two bolts. I was wondering what the nuts on the back side of the bolts are like. Are they welded in place or do you have to get a wrench on them, and if that is the case haw hard is it? I tried feeling for the nuts but could not find them. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've removed the hood safety latch & its receiver (adjacent to the left side wiper post) & catches (from each rear side of the hood) before & they all had nuts welded in place, so I felt confident to loosen one of the hinge bolts about 3/4 turn & re-tighten....& that worked. I then proceeded to loosening the bolt about 3 turns & wiggle it & found that it didn't wiggle....the nuts have got to be welded in place! I probably be easier to leave the hood struts attached to the hood & just remove the cir-clip @ the fender well.

I thought York compressors were commercial grade & pretty decent. What's your thoughts on the swap?

Thanks for the reply, I figured the nuts were welded but didn't want to take a chance. Knowing my luck I would undo one of the bolts and here the nut drop down into some unaccessable body cavity.

As far as swapping the compressor there are a few reasons I wanted to change it.

The Sanden compressor requires less horsepower to run.

Because the A/C was inoperative when I got the car I don't know if the old compressor is good. Also the A/C system sat open for an unknown period of time so the compressor is probably full of a bunch of undesirable stuff.

I'm converting to R134 and the York compressor is full of R12 oil and from what I understand it is not very easy to get all of the old oil out and if the two types of oil mix it is not a good thing.

I'm under a bit of a time crunch. I have about a week to get a few projects done on the car before we drive it up to Alaska. I would just as soon get a new compressor than try to salvage the old one and have it so to speek crap the bed on the trip.

Lastly I think technology has improved a lot in the last 35 years. Don't get me wrong I'm not looking for a modern car here, but, I do want to take advantage of some of the improvements. I have already gone with a gear reduction starter, Pertronics ignition modules, and modern tires.

I know you said you were in a time crunch so you have probably already completed the swap. When time permits please post some details on what you had to do to make the swap. Starting with how the hood removal process went. Info on the bracketry needed and belt alignment would be very interesting also. Of course photos would be great if you took 'em.

    Thanks.

We are on the road right now. I will do a full post with pictures when we get home in a couple of weeks. I'll also do a write up of the trip starting tonight if I have time.
