    Maurice,
Before removing the filter, punch a small hole in the top with a nail or any sharp, pointed instrument. This will release the pressure and allow the oil in the filter to drain out,

Another possible way to avoid this is to remove the filter after you've drained the oil and allowed the engine to cool off totally . I usually drain the oil when hot, then allow it to drain all night. The next day, I remove the filter. This is a bit of overkill, but what the heck. I've never had a drop of oil spill out of the filter this way.

The key is 'punch'. Not to insult your intelligence, but never drill a hole in the filter. Punching leaves no bits of metal. It merely tears the metal.

Agree with DOC here, i drain the fluid when hot and allow it to drip for 30 minutes or more. Then take off the oil filter and she did not drip at all.

Strange, but I have never had this problem with my previous 308 or current 328. If the standpipe and anti-drainback valve is working properly, the oil should be contained within the filter.....just have to remember to keep the oil filter vertical....or it WILL spill....ask me how I know! ;)

I do keep a shop rag or two placed around the base just to catch a possible drop or two during removal.
