Renault unveils first images of 2014 Formula 1 V6 turbo - F1 news - AUTOSPORT.com
Can someone remind me if there are RMP of boost restrictions on the 2014 engines? OR What will prevent the engines from producing 1500 HP for race durations?
Fuel flow rate restrictions according to rpms will keep them from the high HP numbers created in the 80s
I just find it hard to accept that the supposed pinnacle of motor sports racing is happily trundling along to donks that have (ex-KERS) about the same output as current GP2s.
Like in KA- BLOOOMEEEE! As a lot of F1 engines did in the turbo days. Nce looking engine BTW: Turbo plus 6 should give us some really good power. Does anyone notice how small a diameter the exhaust headers are?
Fia has regulated fuel flow up to 8000rpm and a slightly higher rate at and above 10,500rpm. The issue with these engines will not be air/CFM getting into the engine, it will be fuel, as in there is insufficient fuel to maximise bhp to what the capabilities of these power units could certainly be capable of. Also, although maximum allowed rpm will be 15k, with the fuel regulations being as they are at the moment, maximum power can be made pretty much immediately after 10,500rpm where full fuel flow is allowed meaning it will not make a whole lot of sense to rev beyond 12k rpm since the name of the game is longevity with these engines. Quite a few 'techies' out there have run simulations based on fuel flow confirming the above. This all being said, there is a great deal more torque from these engines than current F1 engines. Lastly, I believe the Fia has caught wind of all the 'we won't rev beyond 12k rpm because it makes no sense' news and I conjecture later in the year we will hear something about further fuel being allowed beyond a third rpm step, say 12.5k or something. Fia will not be ok with manufacturers not using the 15k allowed rev limit, no way.
Fantastic pics of the Renault lump here. Have a look at the size of those camshaft lobes. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I do not know how or where this person got them and I refuse to ask questions when such good material is supplied.
Ah you bunch of old coots have to stop being so curmudgeonly. Turbo V6 is way cool - I'm into it. Who cares about the power level?
As a middle age coot I take umbrage. Might as well ask who cares about speed? Or position. The V-6 is cool. All dinosaur burning devices are. My issue is that in F1 (the pinnacle of motor sport) configurations should not be chosen, primarily, because of their ability to communicate a political agenda. Harrumph.
1989-1995 ... 3.5 litre V12 ... 660 hp at 13,000 rpm 19962005 ... 3.0 litre V10 ... 850 hp at 19,000 rpm 2006-2013 ... 2.4 litre V8 ... 750 hp at 18,000 rpm 2014-Current ... 1.6 litre V6 turbo ??? hp at 15,000 rpm Talk about shrinkage.
I'm a middle aged coot as well - and believe me, I like power and speed too. But could you watch a Formula 1 race from the 70's or 80's and not get excited? Certainly the Cosworth cars didn't have the same level of power, but man there is some great racing. If I could go off topic - I am a big fan of drag racing, specifically the NHRA. I grew up near a major track (Englishtown Raceway Park) and have been going to events since 1970 (when I was just a whippersnapper). Obviously, like most forms of racing, making power - more power than your opponent - is a big deal. Well, fuel cars (the fastest, highest powered cars) have gotten so powerful that races are no longer races. 1 car almost always blows up or loses traction...it's boring now. On top of that, it's dangerous - the NHRA rivals the IRL in recent deaths - not good. Cars go sub-4 seconds in a quarter mile - WHO CARES? They were just as exciting when they were sub-5 seconds but racing side-by-side. Long story less long - after one recent tragic death (Scott Kalitta), the NHRA shortened races from a quarter mile to 1,000 feet. STUPID. Now all the tradition of yesteryear is meaningless. Why not move the fences in at Yankee Stadium to 200 feet, or shrink a soccer pitch to 50 yards? Same effect...dumb idea only ruining the sport more. All because they refuse... REFUSE to reduce power. Very. Bad. Idea. Back to F1 - same problem. The quest for never ending power is meaningless. The quest for fantastic, entertaining racing is the holy grail. I laud F1 for making such changes - I'd be just as happy watching Ronnie Peterson in a Lotus 79 as I would Seb Vettel in a RB8. So yea, I get it - I'm a curmudgeon too, but think about why they are doing this. It's certainly gotten me interested again.
It would be interesting to see what a modern F1 car would look like with ZERO restrictions/regulations on anything. And what the lap times would be.
I'd be happy with 750HP. I'm a little out of the loop on how they'll control boost - is it ECU controlled?
