Those both look great. I attended the Porsche "featured marque" day at the Monterey Historics in 2009, and it was fantastic.

Just saw the announcement from PCA - this is great... went to #III at Daytona in 2007 and it was incredible. Looking forward to catching #IV here on the West coast! Here's a link to a good gallery from that event (not my pics) - this is what you can look forward to if you've never been....

2009 was good, but I think the 1998 Monterey event was better as the factory brought a lot more of their cars. I heard the museum is sending their cars to this October event. After studying the various historic cars at the museum a couple of times, seeing them actually do some laps at the track would be special.

I'm also hoping to get my lowly Rothmans 944 factory Cup model car in the race events, but I haven't seen the acceptance requirements.

Looks like they expanded it to include modern-ish Porsches. I would inquire -- I wonder how many 944s were even submitted for consideration (?) Might work in your favor.

I don't think I have a chance in hell of getting an SCCA-raced Speedster on the field against the calibre of cars they mentioned.

I called Laguna Seca folks; entry applications and guidelines may be available online by end of next week. I would still try on your SCCA Speedster especially if it was raced in its period i.e. 50s/60s.

If they are looking for variety, my 944 Cup may indeed have a chance with its actual Canadian Rothmans Challenge and Firehawk race history. We'll see.

I may give it try. Mine was raced from new into the '70s. Apparently never used on the street.

Very cool. I almost bought a 62 Cab with 60s SCCA history before I bought the 944 Rothmans. Care to share photos of your 356?

The Porsche nuts at our company are getting the rest of us fired up for this event. Looks like fun and certainly will draw a big crowd of owners. Looking forward to attending!!

It's in the middle of a year-and-a-half restoration, but here's what it looked like when we hauled it out of the barn in Connecticut (Sept '09 -- just rolled off the truck in San Diego).

    Jon,

Sweet. I hope you are able to restore to the way it was raced in its period...as much as possible. When I was considering a 62 cab, the restoration done to it resulted in taking some historical value off the car such as the metal plaques/plates of the race events attended, modern seat, exterior color change to Gulf colors, etc.

Re: Rennsport Reunion IV, I now understand that the previous events (I-III) allowed various levels of historic Porsche race cars involved - perhaps a good sign for us. I was originally thinking that this event would be as strict as the Monterey Historics event every August.

I considered whether to put it back to yellow with a roll bar, etc., but ultimately opted not to. All of the paint had to come off for restoration and proper metal preservation -- it had been bumped and bondoed on the corners over the years, and had 6-7 coats of cheaply applied race paint as well as the usual rust that Porsche should have listed on the original invoice when they sold a 356. IMHO, recreating the race look using modern paint technology wasn't much more authentic than restoring it to factory colors.

I am retaining the original welded roll bar fittings in the cockpit so that the vintage roll bar can be refitted, but roll bars in a street car aren't safe -- no helmet. So, no roll bar for now.

The owner raced with the stock grey plastic steering wheel and bucket seats. In that era, from what I can tell, you didn't have to change a car as much as you would today.

We are preserving all of the race stickers from the roll bar and headlamp covers. They are too fragile and faded to leave on the car, and probably should have been removed long ago, but the car wasn't historic or valuable when it was retired to the barn in the '70s. I will keep them with the car's documentation. (See photo below.)

With regard to the Quail event, I'm working with Carolyn who manages the invitations/applications. Will see if I can come up with enough documentation for the event planners...

    john,

do you have the log book? if not, i would diligently work w/ the scca to see if it could be recreated. a logbook in period would add significant value to your lovely car and essentially make it eligible for virtually any vintage racing or touring event!

    good luck!!!

I'm in conversation with the previous owner (raced it from 1961 through 1976) to find whatever documentation and photos he has. No log books so far, although his daughter is searching the Old Boxes of Stuff.

He won 26 races in the car at Waterford Hills (near Detroit) back in the day, and set the lap record.

He may also, possibly, be attending the Porsche Race Car Classic. So I might not only have "the car" and "the stuff" but also "the guy" to exhibit at Carmel, if everything goes to plan.

I also have the contact info for the SCCA archivist, so we'll see how that goes.

Is the $400 for the Quail per car, per couple or per person?

the Quail event during Pebble was fantastic when we went some years ago, great food and places to sit down. We loved it. Pebble can be overwhelming. Quail is just right.

Pretty sure it's $400 per person ($350 tax deductible for charity), because you have to wear it around on a lanyard.

I was given two tickets when my car was invited.

I got the official acceptance of my entry to Rennsport Reunion IV. I'm assigned to Group 4, which consists of 934/935/RSR, etc. I'll be in the car with the lowest hp. Yikes! I intend to have fun nonetheless.

I also got tickets to the Quail event. Hopefully, I can still go even if I have a race that same day.

Fantastic! They won't be expecting you when you pass them.

I'm attending both events. Not sure if they'll let me have a non-competitive lap with the Speedster on Saturday, but either way will be there.

My car's getting transported up with a 550A Spyder, one of a bunch that will be at the PRCC/Quail.
