For anyone who has been there over the past 25yrs the reasons are somewhat evident. Last summer I drove past Stead for the first time in over 15 yrs. Growth in that area has completely swamped any remaining safety zones around critical areas of the course. Really surprised it has held on this long after the crash in the early 2000's that ended up in one of the residential neighborhoods.
End of an era. Wonder if there is any other place or insurance company to support it. Between that and CGI being used in movies it really takes a lot of support out of operating warbirds. As bad as the crash of The Galloping Ghost was it could have been far worse and it was just luck the Jet went down where it did.
There's plenty of space in Nevada. Look at the Burning man event. But it costs money which this sport doesn't generate.
Great sadness An area of human innovation and ingenuity goes moribund. There’s still bonneville salt flats and cars for grassroots speed but that about it
