Anybody lived in both places at one time or another? If not, but you've been to both, which would you consider the better of the two for residency, and why?
Lived at Tahoe for 11 years; commuted to Vegas regularly. Can't beat living at the lake, especially the north end. Vegas has more & better entertainment than Reno/Tahoe, but it's only an hour away. The lake environment is totally wonderful all 4 seasons (and very expensive!). Tahoe is close to SF, Vegas is close to LA; take your pick..... FWIW, I never considered moving to Vegas from Tahoe, but some did, "for the action". Reno/Tahoe is more relaxed, much more low key; even the celebs. Probably depends on what you want from your surroundings..... James (also an excellent FCar tech: Bert Skidmore @ Intrepid Motors)
I lived at Tahoe in Incline Village NV 5 years. Loved it, its gorgeous, great for skiing, families, outdoor sports. Reno is pretty greasy & Carson City is just awful Vegas is a lot of fun but I dont know if I'd live there Best way to decide If you are single live in Vegas if you have a family live in Tahoe
Apples and Oranges. They all have gambling, but other than that, they are worlds apart. Tahoe is beautiful. You'll be living in the mountains basically. Ski resorts, the lake, forests, altitude, snow, and many outdoor activities. Its awesome. Vegas is hell. 110 degrees, the desert, hookers, and coke. I'd rather live in Dallas. Reno isn't even a consideration. Remember Reno/Tahoe really isnt the same place. Disclaimer: I've never lived in any, but have friends that do, and have visited countless times. Tomorrow's high; Vegas 106, Tahoe 76. You be the judge.
106 in Vegas isnt bad. After 1 summer here, you get used to it. Also, the typical views of Vegas by those who don't live here are generally wrong. The apply to downton and the strip, but not really anywhere else in town. The Summerlin area, especially is very nice to live in, and believe it or not the majority of Vegas can be considered very clean.
Thank you for the replies thus far, Gents! Reno/Sparks is far more of a factor than Lake Tahoe's immediate surroundings, as the couple's jobs/careers (perhaps one moreso than the other, as one brings in business, the other analyzes results) are in the Gaming Industry. But, obviously, Tahoe is close enough to factor in on "lifestyle," so it figures into the equation and title. As for the southernmost of the 2 - Yes - Summerlin, Green Valley and Henderson have come a long way, baby.
Sorry, I have to interject on this one. I do have to agree that Carson City sucks. If you live there, DEAL WITH IT. It sucks. Reno, on the other hand, is a great town to live in. It has it bad parts, but so does LA, or Dallas, or San Francisco, or any other sizeable city or town. I have lived here all my life, and I don't plan on moving. Keep in mind that living in Reno gives easy access to Lake Tahoe, which is beautiful but I don't want to live there. VERY EXPENSIVE! Reno is not "greasy", if you think so you have only experienced a small part of it, namely the casinos. Most locals don't go there except to eat, some don't even do that. A lot of Reno is really beautiful, and the climate is nice. Keep in mind that Bill Harrah called this area home, and he was heavy into Ferraris and other exotics. He started the Virginia City Hillclimb! I am not trying to step on any toes here, but please don't bash my city until you have really experienced it.
First of all if you're going to bash Reno lets make sure it not second hand knowledge. Do you live here? Reno is a great town, the weather is great, I can drive my Ferraris 100+ MPH most anytime I want to, and sometimes *with* police escort (not chasing me but paving the way). When I sit at my desk I can see Mt. Rose, which has the steepest vertical in the continental US. It takes me 12 minutes to get from my office to the chair lift. A season pass is $300 and there are NO crowds. Lots of great golf courses. Its Tahoe's best kept secret. Its close enough to San Francisco that I can leave my house at 6am, and be driving across the golden gate bridge and have breakfast at the 4 seasons by 10. Napa is even less than that. We have a real airport (unlike Tahoe). I love Tahoe (used to live there) but had to come to Reno for most everything anyway (dr, shopping, normal stuff). Most of Tahoe is pretty dumpy to average at best if you really look around, with some very exceptional properties (ie Lakeshore drive) that are waaay out of most folks league (10 mil+). I've been here 5 years and I think most people's perception is based on some distant bad casino memory from long long time ago. A lot has changed since then. I'll agree Carson sucks.
Amen brother! Yes, some of Tahoe really is nasty! Drive one block away from the lake in Kings Beach, and Holy Crap! Tijauna Porquito! Denalis on 24's parked in front of trailers! When I get my F-car, hopefully in the next 2-3 months, we will have to take a drive. I must repeat, Carson DOES suck.
Thats alright, I take a trip out to Reno every year, and I porefer Vegas. Then again, my trip is limited to the Reno-Hilton and UNR, as it is for a band competition at UNR. We have had a lot of smoke in the air from that SoCal wildfire too.
Like we said, if your experience with Reno is the casinos, you don't know what you are talking about. Spend a week here, stay away from the casinos, and look around. Better climate, better way of life, lots of stuff to do. It isn't Vegas, but we don't want it to be!
