My '99 355 is diagnosed with an electrical short in the a/c compressor. Cost to replace compressor is $3k. Can shorts in a/c compressors be repaired? If so - by whom? Are a/c compressor failures heat related? I have a 'heat deflection shield' installed. Are compressors ever wrapped in 'heat blankets'? Are there better solutions? Thanks.

If it is electrical that would be the drive clutch not the actual compressor. That can be replaced and the quote you have is very steep. Check with a regular AC shop to find out the repair cost. There is nothing unique about a Ferrari compressor other than the pulley.

What is amazing is “this time”. Everyone is charging stupid money for everything and seeing if clients blink.

Does the driven part of the compressor turn
( the center clutch plate that doesn’t turn with the A/C off ) if it does turn with little or no resistance you will just need to replace the magnet clutch and plate which should not cost 3k or $600

But if it doesn’t turn by hand then a compressor is needed and maybe a few other parts (receive a dryer, expansion valve) and a flush of the system because if the compressor let go small pieces can still be floating around in the lines then I can see the cost going up
A good A/C shop is well equipped to handle this type of work at a lower price then Ferrari dealer or even a independent Ferrari specialty shop which I have seen both of these places send the car out or have a guy come in for the A/C repairs

Don’t know where you are but ask around here if anyone is in your area and knows a place

I replaced mine myself. Other than getting the car on the lift and working your hands around tight places there is nothing difficult about it. I bought my new ac unit from an outfit in FL that I can’t recall the name of right now. Compressor and dryer around $800 IRC. Recharge system around $100.
