Hi Gents, My dealer just called me (after I called him for 3 days (Fricken Island time in Florida) and told me what I told him: I hear a ticking in my exhaust and feel it is an exhaust manifold gasket. He confirmed and told me to replace it they need to remove the engine (he said lift which sounded WRONG). He said $1,800 in labor. (really, 9 (or 18) hours in labor for a fricken gasket? Is that right? Damn I wish I was at my house where I can do this myself. Looking for your thoughts on the time estimate. Boaf
You DO NOT need to remove the engine to replace an exhaust manifold gasket..... Removing the headers is a less than fun job but it's doable and done all the time in with motor in car...
It sounds like you need to take the car somewhere else to have the gasket replaced. An educated guess would be four hours of labor to do one side. The guy you spoke to doesn't seem to know what he is talking about. That is a dangerous place to leave a Ferrari.
I recall reading that stooges have done in-car header swaps through the wheel wells in a couple of hours.
I replaced my headers on the floor with jack stands and a jack. Replacing is much harder than removing headers off the studs and slipping on a new gasket! Should be easy as pie with a hoist.
We installed a set of headers in about 2 hours, but there were 4 of us. No engine out required. Either they are trying to make it easier for themselves (doubtful) of they are trying to get more money out of you. It was even easier in a 348.
So probably three hours if there were two of you right? I mean all the beer & BS of four people really does add an hour
Fast cars can correct me if I am wrong but I believe they charged me about 350 bucks to put on my tubi headers. 3.5 hours seems reasonable.
Yeah thats rediculous. Getting to 355 headers is easier than on some chevys. Still the motor does not need to come out.
Thanks, I will. I called F1 Motorsports (About F1 Imports Service Center) who did work on the car already. They indicated that gaskets on those cars rarely fail, more than likely a cracked header (oh joy).
That was my thought initially. Mine had the ticking and it was a break where the airail is attached. I don't think I've heard of an exhaust gasket only failure since I've been here.
Thanks drbob101. I am preparing for the worst. Thinking I may bite the bullet and go Fabspeed. Will see. Boaf
Yup! On the 355 it's a little tight getting the headers out the passenger side (right hand side) but they do come out. On my 348 I have changed out not only the headers but the entire exhaust system all by myself, in a few hours, multiple times. There is NO NEED AT ALL to remove the engine to replaced an exhaust gasket. The other thing is, how do they know it's not just one of the nuts is loose on an exhaust stud? You may not even need a new gasket. It's quite possible it just needs tightening up. Or, your headers my have a leak in the primary/ies? Did they smoke test it to see exactly where the leak is coming from? I vote, take your car some place else.
Thanks Ernie, Taz355. I like the idea of Tig welding as a temporary fix, (have not checked on them in a few days so will call today). I will look for those Goth headers you suggested (search here and the Interweb). Any info on that or are you speaking of Gothspeed the Ferrari owner? I will most likely replace the factory headers, but need the band aid for now. Boaf
Bob - don't waste your time with welding them. I'm fairly certain that would be removal, opening of the clam shells, finding the issue(s), trying to weld thin tubing that's blown apart, putting the clam shells back on and re-installation. Just order some Tubi and be done
To clarify i was talking about welding the air rail not the exhaust. As Dave said and I agree welding of the exhaust would mean you have to take th shell off weld the pipe and replace the shell. If the shell has a hole the pipe is gone and likely not an easy fix. Only weld pieces connected to exhaust which are NOT actually the exhaust. The goth exhaust is Gothspeeds designed exhaust and in my opinion is the best available. At the time I went with what I thought was the best which was a tubi header with hyperflow cats and a capristo twin valve murfler with the gruppe m intake. I knew I was keeping car a long time and wanted a good system for twenty plus years.
I would definitely have the car taken somewhere differently if they're stating they need to remove your motor to R&R headers. Also, opening the clamshell and trying to find a (usually) hairline crack is pretty labor intensive.
