I just wanted to pass on this recent experience of mine...

My 95 355 shift knob was thrashed. Chipped and scuffed and black-marked all over. I ordered an aluminum one from Hill Engineering in the UK -- about $60. It came in about a week and is just terrific. I couldn't be happier with this sponsor's product. But here's the surpise: After I put the new one on, I started messing with the old one, which I had avoided before, assuming I'd make it worse. I scraped off the thin plastic outer coating that was chipping, then used a good metal polish on the chrome. Now the darned thing looks like new! Anyway, lesson learned on my part. Could have saved some money on that if I had tried the refurbishing first.

Yes, and no. The problem is that without the "clear coat" the stock aluminum knob will scuff and tarnish quickly. Granted, a quick job with a cloth and some metal polish (like Wenol or Flitz) will having it looking tip top again. I have been thinking about getting the chrome plated version from Hill Engineering, that makes the most sense. No clear coat to wear off, and chrome is very durable and hard to scratch, compared to aluminum.

You could also have it powdercoated. Won't be slipping in your hand during gear changes.

I've ordered a set of 355 cam belt tensioner bearings from Hill Engineering. I'm looking forward to getting them, I've heard a lot of good stuff about Hill. I might go for a chrome gearknob too !
