My alternator blew again on monday. Had it rebuilt using the upgraded parts about 3 years ago, but have decided to get a new one instead this time. Unfortunately, there are none available here in the UK and the couple that are overseas are big money. Stupid question probably, but has anyone ever replaced it with one from another vehicle? eg: Honda, toyota etc
Replaced mine with one similar I matched up at the parts store. The new one was basically the same, but the mounting tabs were "clocked" differently, but I was able to use the old half of the case with the proper clocking. Wish I could remember the part number. Took a little time, but when you're in Pahrump, NV, you work with what ya got. It would be interesting to look at an alternator from a Honda S2000, a 9000rpm motor, to see what it uses for the high rpm application....
I can't speak to your specific application but companies like Powermaster specialize in alternators and starters and I always use them when I want to upgrade or use a different alternator all together. Not too many alternator designs. Just look for one that mounts, accepts your pulley and aligns correctly. Or find out the part # and see what other "normal" car it was installed on and buy that one.
Sy, is yours the Delco or Nippondenso model? Here is a bolt-in replacement for the Delco and they run about $100 here in the US: http://search.waiglobal.com/partsearch/partnum.aspx?part=7973N You will need to use your existing pulley wheel, and never a bad idea to throw in the upgraded components, but the price is hard to beat. I keep one as a spare.
Thanks guys. It's a Nippon/Denso one. A friend has a 355 alternator. Anyone tried fitting that to a 348?
I put the dodge monoco one on mine about 2 years ago. puts out a little less amps but have had no problems so far. Plus the price was about 80 bucks, local, and had it fixed the night it broke because the local auto parts store had it in stock.
Yup...I've heard that before someplace....Dodge Monaco. Maybe it was Ernie's thread. I had mine rebuilt at a local alternator shop for $150. They did an outstanding job with a 24 hr turnaround.
I believe the late 348 Nippondenso and 355 Nippondenso alternator are the same. That one is a Delco Remy CS-130 with the correct case; unfortunately it will not work on later model 348s that have had the Nippondenso upgrade.
Unfortunately, the 355 alternator won't fit in a 355. The 355 one looks slightly bigger and the fittings are opposite to the 348 one. I took a comparison pic with my phone and will upload it later. Also found out the cause of the non-working alternator. One of the connecting bolts broke off. Seems the bolt was 6mm but the fitting on the 348 is 8mm.
