Anyone know of a good inexpensive replacement battery for a 308??
Cheap parts and Ferrari so not belong in the same sensence. i went with the EnerSys PC680. Weights about 50% less than a stock battery You do not NEED the aluminum cover, though because the car is raced a lot i felt an additional hold down was better than the press on holder stock offers, but the stock hold down alone will work fine for most daily commuter Ferrari drivers. I'm sorry I can't recall the brand, but I've picked up a few batteries (I've been happy with) from Walmart for my 308 at about $30 a piece. They aren't knock off brand either, and I've used them in all my cars from corvettes, the lotus right down to the 308. Since I store my cars for 6-7 months over the winter, I only usually get 2 drving seasons out of them...that's $15 per summer, which is not bad. I don't see the point in putting out the big $ for somethign like an optima when I only need it for 5 months....I'd have to take it out, trikle charge it for 8 months...blah, blah, blah. Thus I go to Walmart, spend $30 every 2 years and I'm happy.
What kind? What size? Is a battery a battery? I was otld by the guy at CarQuest Auto Parts that they did not have a reference for Ferrari 308. He made it sound like all batteries were not the same. Can I buy a regular car battery Walmart and not fry the electrical system? I need a cheap(good) replacement as the car is for sale and I don't want to get into specialty products.
The great Optima Yellow Top battery is sold under the NASCAR battery label at Sam's Club for about $100.
Not all bateries are the same...that is true. The ones I've picked up from Walmart are 750-850 cranking amps and top post style, which work in my 1980 GTSi. I could tell you the brand tomorrow. I've never had any trouble with the electrical system using these batteries. I use them in my 66 corvettes, 88 lotus Esprit, a john deere tractor I have and the 308. Most parts places like pep boys, napa, autozone, etc don't have a lot of info or cross reference on ferraris parts of any kind. For simple things like batteries, bring in the old one or take it's measurements and it's cranking rating and say you need one "like this". Never say it's for a Ferrari... the $ mysteriously increases once they come back from the back room! If it's the same size and the same cranking power it shouldn't make a diffenece. I'll check tomorrow on the brand. P.S. What's for sale?
Thanks for the reply. For sale is my '83 308 GTS QV black/black. If you or anyone else is interested let me Know. See my profile. I recently bought a '94 348 tb Challenge.
I good, inexpensive replacement battery for most Ferraris (308 included) is an Interstate size 34R. It retails for around $70 to $75 and fits perfectly.
Yellow Top Optima, Deep cycle I have tried them all, It has great shelf life ( 2 years) has minimal self discharge,so when you disconnect the battery with the DC connector, you will find that even after 4 months of storage, the 308 will fire right-up. You will expect about 7 to 8 years of life, maybe even longer Still have one in my wifes' car, and it is going on 8 years. Run out and buy one ( deep cycle) not the Red Top
You DO have to have the right case size, so the OEM style base clamp will work..... I went with NAPA #6026..............whatever. Steve, where is the battery gonna go, with the screw down lid and spare tire on top of it????? LOL!
Spare tire??? You mean the car has a spare tire??? Never seen it in the car as i hear it adds weight... but i DO have a nice can of Fix A Flat and my Insurance's Roadside Service nuber
j/k.....I only load my spare when 'hitting the road' for a long trip.... Roger that, flat bed roll back 'on call'.....the guy took my cell phone, and put his numbers in there! LOL!
An important factor in buying a battery, apparently, is SIZE. I bought an Optima Red Top - I didn't check to see what size the old battery was. Most of my previous battery purchases were done at Sears Auto (pull in, Sears Tech does the swap, pay your money, drive off), so I didn't realize there were various sizes in car batteries - mine is alittle loose, needless to say... BTW, I noticed that stainless steel battery cover hold-down nuts are easily available from Ebay now....
