The original headliner in my '80 GTSi is sagging and the overall condition of the fabric is in pretty poor shape. I know that the orignal fabric is nearly impossible to find so I'm considering having it done in leather, but also considering a later 308 fabric. Leather would be great but probably higher cost and I'm a bit concerned about matching the seats/console color/texture. The interior is original and has it's own "patina" which I like, so... leather vs. fabric??? Anyone have experience with this, has anyone done their own work (doesn't look too bad to DIY maybe) or is it best left to the pro's, and if so what material did you use, hints, tips, etc??? As always thanks in advance!

Pick a leather color close to what color it is suposed to be (under all the dirt because that 80-82 material attracts it like a magnet) and put that in.

At least that is what would do. It would be the easiest and, most likely, less expensive way to go.

And, yes, you are not going to find that material anymore. In fact I wouldn't even bother looking.

If all your doing is the headliner, I would recommend getting black leather from a leather shop and having a good interior person recover it. Or tan if you want to try and match it.

I have eleather in my 81, and it is the same color as the seats, and looks good. Since it never rains in San Diego, the top lives in my hangar at the airport under a sheet.

Go with the leather, it looks a lot better.

    Happy trails.

We found an alcantara we liked and redone all cloth pieces and love it. If you try it be careful on the compound curves in the roof panel. We also covered all with a closed cell neoprene to add a wear factor. Lost

That is a really good find. You should put that up in the "sticky" parts cross-reference thread

    A very good find indeed.

I'd still go with the leather though!

Having put it in some 10 years ago (and mine is crema) you realise just how much dirt and rubbish accumulates back there from driving with the roof off - which is why the original fabric looks so dirty & old in so many cars.

The leather is very easy to clean & keep clean, the fabric, not so.

I bought some of the fabric based on this thread, and it's darker than what's in my car. I think other cars have the darker color based on my conversation with Glen on Saturday.

I'm going to need the lighter shade I think. I cut a strip of the new fabric off and put it on my rear deck for the pic. It's not a great quality photo, but you get the idea.

    Jim,

I just got the KKK988 in and it looks identical to your picture of your brown original. My original has been painted black by previous owner so cannot say if its a perfect match.

    Best Regards,

Just to be clear this is the kkk988.

The battery is about the size of a nickel. Thats to give you an idea of the pitch of the pattern.

That is a good find. Reoriginals sells the exact stuff but for a lot more. Like put a zero next to that price per yard.

Glen took the darker material off my hands on Saturday, it matched the headliner in his 308 nearly perfectly. I ordered the KKK988 today.

I bought 2.5 yards, no idea if it's enough or not, but I think it's likely too much. Better too much than too little. And at $14/yd, what's an extra half yard?
