    Hi Folks:

I have a faulty water temp gauge in my 1984 308GTSI that I need to replace. I thought I would also replace the lights in my dashboard at the same time. Any suggestions on how to get started with the disasembly? PS - I already have the gauge and lights.

Check ash13's "clock" thread below I think there's a link, she means speedo....

The screws for the instrument plate are behind the dash lights...

Or is your temp gauge in the console?

Use the 'search' feature for the upgraded dash light bulb numbers.......

    No worries....not the first time!

As you see in my comments to ash13, watch the plate edges against the vinyl........

    Good Luck!!

What is the motivation for replacing the water-temp gauge, and not the sending unit?

The temperature gauge has been acting up for a while now (needle showing higher or lower than actual temperatures) and I can usually fix it by tapping the gauge itself. So...I assumed it was not the sending unit. I am getting tired though of tapping the damn gauge.

    Have I mis-diagnosed the problem?

If your finger fixes the gauge, every time, then nope- you got it. I was wondering if you took some actual temp readings somewhere and matched them to the gauge first...

Yep...done that as well. I will however see if the gauge has good clean contact points, but since I have virtually rebuilt this car I guess its time for this part to go.

BTW, I haven't done the research, but WHERE is the sensor for the gauge? Where else (besides the radiator) is a good reading possible, with say an infrared device?

I usually see them in the thermostat housing, but have to admit I don't know for sure on the 308. There's an electrical connector at the bottom of the expansion tank, which may be it. But that would be a silly place to put it, IMHO.

Do you have an infrared temp gun? If not, I can bring one on Sunday.

The 308 water temp sensor is mounted in the (cast metal) Y-crossover pipe that runs between the two cyl. heads (i.e., where the hot coolant comes "out" of the engine).

Mine was reading incorrectly as well. Prior to replacing the gauge I cleaned the contacts on the back and all was good. Try that first.
