It may be best to open up the fan regulator/resistor and see how much damage there is inside. Ferrari 36o owners have the same dilemma at the moment (different part number, but some similar internal components). Repairs can be made. In some cases, other model regulators can be modified.

The MOSFETs usually need upgrading, but other internal components may fail.

The one in your photo may have potential and is relatively inexpensive. I'm surprised there are so many available.

Thanks. I took it apart to take a look inside and ended up cracking a smaller board inside. It was toast (when not getting an E7 error, fans would just go to any speed at random), so I was rougher with it not caring if it broke.

For those wanting to take it apart, make sure you remove the solder on the 6 pins in the picture below. That’s the only way to safely pull the board out. I pried the plastic cover off with a small screwdriver to get to the board.

The older Alfas fan controller (as rare as the 348/355's) shown in the link provided by Ian is identical to the unit used in the 348 & 355. The picture shows only one transistor temporarily soldered on for testing. Otherwise, it also uses two transistors (which were removed by the owner in the process of trying to repair the unit). These controllers use normal power transistors, not MOSFET-s, and the fan speed control is analogue.

The fan controller sold on Ebay (for Alfa 159, Renault Laguna etc.) is a China made knock-off. I do not know about the knock-off but the original controller uses two powerful MOSFET-s and the fan speed control is digital, i.e. PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). The unit looks rather similar to the original Ferrari/Alfa unit but it will not work in a 348/355, not because of different connector sockets but because its electronics will not "understand" the fan control signal from the Ferrari AC ECU-s.

I have developed additional electronics that I install inside the Renault PWM controller to adapt it for the 348/355, using original (good used) units, not the knock-offs. Anyone interested can PM me. The modified unit, ready to be installed:

I do not have other upgrades but I have a number of brand new original Bosch MAF-s that are meant for other cars but I have adapted them for the 348. These MAF-s are electronically identical to the original 348's MAF (although they have different Bosch numbers) so my adaptation was to only add a ring to the MAF side that connects to the air filter box, like this:

Another conversion I have made is adaptation of the 355 Exhaust ECU-s for use on 348-s. I have done this on my 348 and I do not really intend to make more of these and sell. You can search the forum for my write-up and pictures on the conversion. A few pics:
