I looking for new shocks for the rear of my car (4)and don't want to go the OEM route (KONI)...anyone out there replace these with something else (cheaper!) that works great? I image these are the same ones as on the 365 GTC/4 as well. Your help would same me a world of hurt!

i wish i could be more specific but i understand that Mercedes has a shock that does the job. come to think of it, i've heard the same about a shock used for a caddy. good luck and please keep us posted as i'll eventually be looking for the '78 400 as well. i'll try and find out more and post again.

THanks Brett for the new direction to look....my friend has a 1973 SL, so I'll check and see if the shocks are similar...If I find out anything else, I'll let you know.

I'm too lazy tonight to look in my book, but does the 365GT/4 2+2 have the self leveling suspension that the later (400-400i-412) versions in the series have?

If so, the shocks are apparently NLA from Koni and only one guy in AZ rebuilds them (Jeff LeBlond) but he has been criticized by Tom S. that the rebuild doesn't last more than about 6 months.

I had not heard that Mercedes has a shock that will fit (I have a 400i) but I have heard that there is a Mercedes accumulator that works well and is cheaper than the Ferrari part.

I have heard of at least one conversion of a 400i to a Monroe airshock system that, after a bit of engineering in mounting points, etc., worked well.

i remembered that it was on Ferrari-Talk that i read the thread regarding the Benz shock as a replacement. however, when i went to check it out i noticed that you now have to register for that forum and i haven't done that yet. it would be nice to keep this alive until we actually have an answer.

Well I happen to operate my turbo business at FJB LTD. Jeff Leblond is my uncle. I know there was a problem with a few load levelers, but I believe we now have it fixed. More often then none, shocks that come back as leaking are because the mechanics installing them do not flush out and clean the entire system. We open the shocks back up, and they are full of contamination, causing the seals to leak. Not to say that is the case here, but I have seen Tom S bashing my uncles good name a few times on here, with more than several guys saying just the opposite. But hey not all of Jeff's customers hang out on the internet, 1 guy out of 1000 has a bad experience.....

I had my Koni's rebuilt at Skip McCabe's shop in Mundelein, Illinois for about $1,000 for the 4 "normal" shocks. Skip does a nice job. My rear shocks do not leak, but do not work particularly well, either. Jeff Leblond has indicated that his self-leveler rebuilds need to be redone every 5 years or so, so this is an expensive option. I would like to hear about how the Munroe or Gabriel gas shock conversion has worked, as I have seen this done on a few cars. Also note that Rutland sells an updated self-leveling spring/shock assembly for about $1800.

I'd like to know more about the Rutlands option. What is updated in it?

I generally try to keep my cars as original as possible, so I'm not interested in replacing the load levelling system (and so far, in 12 years, I haven't had a problem). But, it's always good to know what the options are.
