All, I am looking for guidance and procedures to replace the seal behind the timing gear drive in my 81 308gtsi. The seal on my engine is behind the outer bearing. I got as far as taking off the drive gears and removing the snap ring from the bearing leaking oil. Attached is a picture of what I am looking at.

@tomberlin, that showed great detail for taking the seal out from behind the pulley. Is it the same for the drive gears? pull bearing out and seal same way? thank you.

The seals leak because the front bearing is bad. This isn't a difficult job but you either need to get the special bearing puller or you can drill a hole in the bearing retainer and and put a self tapping screw in the retainer and pull out the bearing. I'm sure if you use the search function there are posts on how some have done this. There are 2 different bearings used and seals. The early cars and the later cars meaning the carb vs. the FI

I'm back on the road. Thanks for the help everyone. run through of what I did, I pulled the bearing out by breaking the cage and using a screw to pull it while heating the cover. Then took off snap ring in front of seal and with using a hook tool and screwdriver pulled the old seal out.
