Having been inspired by others, I want to freshen up my 348 cam covers with red wrinkle paint. Can anyone give me a few tips? What seals etc do I need? The gaskets on the covers themselves were replaced about two years ago? Do they need replacing each time covers are removed? Is it false economy NOT to change them? Any other seals or gaskets I should replace while I have the covers off. (I have no leaks). Any other things to look for, like stud threads which strip out or anything like that? Any tips on the best way to get them out (via wheel arches or from above etc.) Any help most appreciated. Thanks in advance Drew
My 355 is going in for its major shortly and I have red paint peeling off my cam covers. I want them refinished - but who should do this and are there any special issues I should pay attention to. Not to hi-jack the thread, but this seems to match the topic pretty well and hopefully 348 and 355 owners can both report their experiences.
Just done mine, used paint stripper to remove the old paint, then scotchbrite to finish and key the surface, degreased and then painted with Frost's crinkle paint. Gaskets you will need are, 2 cam cover gaskets and the 4 for the end plates and timing sensor. Steve I tried a few internet searches but could not find Frost's paints. Could you provide some info on how to get some of this stuff?
Thanks Steve - it was your covers which inspired me! ;-) I went to FART but I see they do the paint to special order. I'd previously picked up the black, 'cos someone a while back posted that red isn't available and you paint black then spray red. It was this dubious process which had put me off up to now. After googling "VHT Wrinkle" I found a "local" supplier in Germany. On the gasket subject, is it 49 or 54 which you mean? Did you use any special tricks or tools to get them off? The reason I ask is that my workshop is in France but the car is in a lock-up in Germany, so I'll have to take all tools necessary in my Lufthansa baggage. It is 49 & 54 that you will need and the same for the other side.Note that oneof the gaskets is different for the other side. You will also need 2 x item 44. No special tools or tricks, but I have the engine out at the moment so it was pretty straightforward.
The gaskets for the main covers are the same, but the cam end cover gaskets are different. Remember to use a small dab of RTV sealant where the gasket meets the o-rings at the pulley end or it could leak big time. Don't use too much or it will spread when you torque down the cover and a bit of sealant could end up in the oil. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Where do you get all these 3D sketches? They do not exist in my work shop manual. Would be nice to have, I imagine. //B//
Parts Manual. CD-ROM turns up on eBay every so often. I have one for the 348 GTB/GTS. pm me if you're interested.
