I’m replacing leaky cam seals on my 85 308 QV and have a question. The car has the rock guards behind the cam pulleys, so do I have to remove the cam pulleys to remove the cams from the guards or do I unbolt the cams and slide them out through the guards? I guess the question is, do I have to remove the cam pulleys to clear the rock guards?

    thanks!

No, you don't have to remove the pulleys.

I think that answer is a bit misleading.

    1) You can remove the cam shaft with the pulley attached to the cam shaft and then remove the cam shafts through the rock guards, then replace the seals

    or,

    2) You can use an impact wrench to remove the large bolts at the pulleys, remove the pulleys from the cam shafts, leave the cam shaft in place and remove the rock guards and the cam seals
