Do you really have to remove the rear bumber cover to change the gear lube filter?

True and on the 355, 348, 328, Testarossa, and BB removal and disassembly of the transmission was required to service the filter.

The 360 was a real step forward.

My intention is to do this with every yearly service. I'd rather not, of course. :) Is it overkill?

How many of your other cars, Ferrari or otherwise require a filter change on the manual transmission?

And for bonus points how many of the other Ferrari listed required routine filter servicing?

    1. None of them.
    2. I have no idea.

The manual says oil+clean filter every 2 years. I know you recommend every year for the oil but you've never mentioned the filter that I've found. Competizione cleans the filter every year and my intent was to do it as well. I'm simply curious if you concur but I can't tell based on your response.

All Ferrari built since the QV and many before it had pressurized oiling systems in the transmission. Many other cars do too. All of those have a strainer screen (some refer to it as a filter) for the oil pickup. Also almost all motors ever built have a strainer screen on the motor oil pickup as well. All will flow several more times the amount of oil than the oil pump can. The vast majority of all of those are difficult to get to and are not expected to be cleaned unless a catastrophic event happens and it is the screens job to prevent recycling the debris until the required repair or overhaul is performed.

The 360 is no different except Ferrari chose to put it on the list of serviced items to explain away the high cost of service. If the screen has any meaningful debris in it you do not need an oil change, you need a major repair and you will know that long before anyone removes the screen..

Brian- Learn something new every day. Funny Ferrari says to clean that screen/filter, but nowhere do they tell you to change coolant. Some strange dichotomies in their tech data.

First, thanks Brian. I thought that might be what you meant, but with these cars I never know.

No kidding! The O2 sensor and charcoal canister are on a change schedule for the 360 but no coolant or brake fluid.

I am not sure about the brake fluild, but I would do the cooland once every two years....and likely the same for the brake fluid. The advice I was given was engine oil and gear oil once a year, all other fluids once every two years.

The brake/clutch fluid is on the schedule for annual changes (16 Below), but nothing about the coolant. Even the refrigerant calls for changes every two years. Some weird stuff.

Plus I change my gearbox fluid every year, like Brian recommends.

I read that as a check not a change.

It says "Replace once a year".

    oops. Reading comprehension fail.

FWIW, my service manual does not mention replace (not that I would skip it).

Another reason to double check service intervals. All the Ferrari owner's manuals that I have that have maintenance schedules show annual brake/clutch fluid changes, including the 360 excerpt above. Especially important for those who live in humid climates.

The later cars have separate maintenance schedules in the warranty book, which still show annual brake/clutch fluid changes through the 612 and F430, as do the WSMs for those two cars. For the California, the maintenance schedule shows changes every 2 years. Who knows why? Even Ferrari is trying to cut down on maintenance requirements.
