Hi everybody, I have recently become the owner of a 308 GTS which needs the starter rebuilt.
I can hear it spinning but the starter seems to not engage with the engine.
I am looking for advise on what to look out for when removing the starter as well as any literature that may be available showing all sorts of technical diagrams How To's? etc. regarding the 78 308GTS.

    Thanks in advance,
    Helmut

If you've got the budget, fit a 328 one. They're MUCH smaller and lighter and will bolt straight on.

If you have to re-use the 308 one, just get any auto elec to rebuild it.

To remove it from the car it can be a struggle to get it out. But it will caome past the clutch and water pipe with some manual dexterity.....

What would cause the flywheel to be an issue?

Would it be a consistant or intermittant issue?

Reason I ask is about four weeks ago I would turn on the car and the starter would spin but not fire the motor. I would try it again and then it would fire. It did it about 4 more times over the span of a week and then it stopped. It's fine now.

The flywheel teeth may have a bald spot. ie. Teeth may be missing. It would be intermittent, as the bald spot would only stop by the starter every 10 times you shut it off. The cause is usually someone turning the key and spinning the starter while the engine is running. Put the car in 5th gear on a level surface with the engine off. Push the car FORWARD ONLY while its in gear and the engine will turn over slower than the wheels. Now take it out of gear and try to start it. If the starter is ok, it should crank over until it hits the bald spot again. Then youll need a flywheel.

Thanks very much for replying to my post.
The idea of pushing the car forward in 5th gear in order to engage the starter with the engine sounds good but it seems that my starter no longer has that option, it never engages at all; I will take it out and have it rebuilt.

    Thanks again.
