After reading a couple posts its seems that most of our 348's are getting to an age where the steering rack bushings are old and due for replacement. Can anyone give me an idea of what this job will cost? Obviously hourly rates very from shop to shop.. any idea how many flat rate hours the job should take?

One fchatter took his time and did the whole job (including making his own bushings) in 5 hours: http://www.the348.com/tech/348.html#Steering

That link also shows a free test to perform prior to any disassembly to identify the steering problem.

No Doubt, didnt you have a guy in California that rebuilt the racks for couple hundred dollars? Thought I saw a name on your site before that did it.

Yup. It's on the link above.

I'd also think that if a 348 Brother does remove the steering rack, that we'd be able to cross-reference it and find that it's a generic TRW rack-n-pinion or some such, rather than a made-by-Ferrari part.

    From No Doubts site:
Mark 328 points out that Reyes Alternators in Orange, Ca said they could rebuild 348 steering racks for $170.00.
Their number is 714-633-4208. The owners name is Leonardo Reyes.

I have no reason to question my rack (or my wife's) they both seem a-ok. I also tend to be a lousy mechanic. Just trying to get a ballpark of what it's going to cost to have it done.

PS. Can anyone help me find the bushing on the Ricambi site? I can never seem to find stuff on there...

    Hey Chris,

Did your endplay adjustment solve your "kick-back" issue. That's the big thing I'm after here.

    Chris,

Excuse my ignorance but after consulting the shop manual... what exactly was involved in adjusting the endplay... I thought I kenw what you were refering to but now i'm lost. Can you spell it out for me?

Unsure as my mechanic did it. He made it sound like it was obvious once he was under the car? I do not know if it is shims or an actual adjustment :(
