Truly, a hand-built car! It would be interesting to compare the build quality to the real thing. Did he make a better Countach?

I can't get over the fact it took 17 years to build.

THAT is one fine piece of work! An engineer may well not have the creativity to design something completely original from scratch - not many people do. Some people deride "replicas," but in this sort of instance, I think they should be admired.

Amazing work, BUT still a fake. IMO a one-off would have been a better idea.

I love this story, in the end he could have bought an original, but instead he built something that's his. He has the memories of all those nights at the drawing board trying to piece it all together, then the parts coming in, and the problems that occured from that. It's looks like a very rewarding expierence.

btw this is a repost. I don't mind seeing it come back though :D

WOW. That is impressive, I don't care what it may be a replica of. Nobody whines and moans about the avaition guys building amazing replicas of P-51's and FW-190's. This is not much different, IMO.

I will probably build one of the replica Cobra Daytona coupes or GT40's one of these days, mostly because I think it would be great fun to build a car completely from shiny, clean, new parts instead of ones that are covered in 30 years of grime, sludge, tar, mouse turds, and rust like other restoration projects I have done!

Sorry about the repost - I don't visit the General Auto Discussion section, so am unaware that this was posted...

In any case, I was impressed when I first read this story. I too wanted to build my own car and in fact, I would have if I didn't come across the Ferrari 308 GT4 for sale locally that I eventually bought!

Back around 1998, I purchased the book: "Build Your Own Sports Car For Under 250 (UK Pounds)" written by Ron Champion. It is basically a Lotus Super Seven that you make from scratch and all of the parts lists and chassis blueprints are included. It has become popular in the UK since then and many build-forums have been started on the 'net.

In 2000, I was ready to build - bought the welding machine, got a few of the parts and started pricing out the steel tubing and aluminum sheet when I came across the website of a local exotic car dealer and saw the ad for the GT4 (which I knew/saw a few years before). I thought: "hmmm, do I spend the next couple of years building the Seven, or do I go down to this dealer and buy this FERRARI?..." It didn't take very much to answer that question ;)

One of these days though, I will build that Seven!
