Was wondering what everyone here thought about replicas in general, not just Ferrari, but all of them, lambo everything. I hate them with a passion personally and hate the owners even more. You never see a owner of a replica admitting its a replica which drives me crazy.

So what do you guys think?

replicas of something you can find on the market like a replica of Lambo's countach or a tesstarossa are totally ugly. They are around you can walk in and buy those. But the exact replicas of, say, Ford GT40 or a 250 GTO or some rear piece are ok, I think. Remember the very first Ferrari car showing at the Ferrari Museum is also a replica...

Replicas really tick me off. I like to look for Countaches on ebay and 90% of the cars out there are replicas. It seems like replicas outnumber the real thing by a wide margin.

Now there are even Murci replicas out there?? Where's my gatling gun?

    I suggest the following categories:

    1. Fakes: something that vaguely looks like a Ferrari based on something completely different (i.e. Fiero based 355).

    2. Replica's: uses Ferrari engine and chassis, but wants to look like another tipo (i.e. 250 GTO based on GTE or 330 2+2).

    3. Recreations: something using Ferrari parts, but mostly non original and wants to look/be like a certain tipo or chassis (i.e. 156 Sharknose replica)

    4. Continuations: a certain car is destroyed and some remains are used to create a new car (how much is used may vary...). I'm not going to give examples (let your fantasy work ;-)

    Any comments?

I've got mixed emotions when it comes to replicas.
I think a good looking one could be a tribute to the original as long as it doesn't have the original badges and the owner doesn't pretend that the car is anything than a replica.

When a replica has all the badges, in the case of Ferrari, Scuderia shields and prancing horses, I think it's fraud.

A replica when done properly (and i am not talking about Fiero based kits) can be a thing of beauty and in my opinion actually honour the marque to witch it resembles, look at the replica below and truly say you hate it i dont think you can.

If not for the square driver's and passenger's window, it's pretty close to the real thing. IMO it's awesome.

I HATE replicas! Doesn't care if it's a Supra, Fiero or VW. If you want a Ferrari, buy a Ferrari! If you can't afford it, buy an Alfa og something else, but nothing that looks like a Ferrari!!!

Maybe this is part of Steve's previous "A replica when done properly..." (and ditto on his whole post from me), but the powerplant/drivetrain/chassis has to be of the same essence IMO -- e.g., an F40 built on a front-engine V8 platform wouldn't qualify, but I'd take a GT40-lookalike with a mid-mounted 427 anyday.

I think there is only one that i would ever consider buying, I think the best replica we have seen would be the lamarrossa. that guy must of spent 10,000 man hours on it, perfection.

someone here might be able to find a pic and post it.

The Beck Spyder is one replica that I would own. Used to have a Devin in 1979 that was occasionally mistaken for a Ferrari. Check out the Spyder at beckspyder.com.

I like them, as I do Cobra Daytona coupe replicas and GT40 replicas.

Nobody destroys a real Cobra to make a replica ... so enjoy the blast guilt free :)

Some are really well made too.

This post is a great example of why it's OK to buy a replicar. An aftermarket Cobra is on my list. If you owned a real one, would you ever drive the damn thing much? I think not. Also, the Cobra replicar is better built and sports superior handling Vs an original. For $30-$40K, they are fun!

As for other replicars, a lot of them are started as project cars by guys that 'just want to build one' and later sold when the novelty wears off. As for the El Cheapo knock-offs, you can have 'em!

Here is a replicar of a 1939 MBZ SSK Roadster that I owned about ten years ago. My uncle built it on a 1965 Bug frame. He dropped about $15K and 300 hours into it. He sold it to me for $5K. I sold it for $7500. It was as much fun to drive as it was an absolute death trap!

They are fast, they make great sounds and they are fun.

I personally have NO desire to own one tho.

I belong to the San Diego Shelby Club. The majority of members own replica cobras. We have a couple of real Cobras, a bunch of Shelby Mustangs and even more Shelby clones and plain Mustangs.

Everybody is a car guy (and a couple of car gals too). They like talking, driving and just enjoying the sound of American Iron.

427 Cobra rep is a great street driver. Esp the drive to & from work every day-as long as you don't mind your shoes sticking to the floor board.
