http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/19/report-chevrolet-slaps-first-incentives-on-zr1-amidst-swelling/ A dealer in New Orleans has two '10s in the showroom. Given that the area can't support a Porsche dealer anymore (closed last year) I don't see too many local folks buying $120K Vettes.
FWIW..........you can buy a brand new 2010 LS3 Vette coupe up here in Canada for $52K...........a huge discount from MSRP........which used to be over $70K.........
500 ZR1's in stock across the dealer network, that's insane....what was total production during that time? I thought I never saw ZR1's because they were so rare...turns out nobody bought one! yikes.
$3k cash back on a $120k Corvette that isn't selling? What genius hatched that plan? Anyone in the real world know what these cars are actually selling for, new?
When the 2009 ZR1 first appeared they sold for 'over' list price. The dealers that got the rare ZR1 held out for big premiums but they got left holding the bag when the music stopped. Thus the large buildup of inventory. Couldn't happen to a nice bunch... The only problem with buying a Corvette even if you can get a discount is you have to take it to a Cheverolet dealer for warranty work. Chevrolet has stated they will continue to sell the ZR1 model as long as the C6 platform continues. The list price for that model in Canada is $148,000 CH
We looked at a Chevy dealer not too long ago and they had THREE ZR1's on the floor They were trying to cook up some great deals. But, still no one was going to pay $110k for them.
The first owner of my 1995 ZR-1 (one of the last 50 C4 cars) paid a little over $95,000 for it. Needless to say, he did not get his money back out of it.
I agree. Besides I have a very docile c5 with 1005 RWHP and automatic that will flat leave one in the dust with about 60k invested. 110k? No thanks
+1. I have never seen one on the road... at least I don't think I have. Can't tell them from the others... Gee does anyone think that may limit sales?
Maybe they should offer an option to remove the silly glass plate in the hood. I would pay an extra 3 grand for that.
I only saw 2 and both were at car events. Nice car but i would put that much money into one (They look too similar to the regular Vette).
1,415 2009's were built, 1,577 2010's. The Z06 really got the squeeze with the release of the Grand Sport. Only 516 were built in MY2010 vs. 6,042 Grand Sport (Coupes + Convertibles). 3,461 Z06's were built in MY2009.
I use to work with a guy that has driven nothing but Vettes since the 70's. During the C4 days he had a regular one and a ZR-1 at the same time. IIRC he paid high $60Ks and said the ZR-1 option was more than half the cost. I think he said he sold it for low $30Ks just a few years later. It will be interesting to see what they bring in 20 years.
Just get an aftermarket hi rise hood - probably less than $3k with paint. The Z06 is 95% of the ZR1 anyway and you still get the wide body look without that dumb lexan window. Personally, I'd rather have a Z06. I like my base C6 a lot and would love a Z06. You can get lightly used ones for less than $40k now. That's a hell of a lot of car for the dough. Maybe when times are better I'll get one. RMX
Lingenfelter offer a supercharger that will fit under the stock hood now... and is cheaper than the Magnussen blower too... I'd expect about 700 hp without a huge effort there.
so there's 500 out of ~3,000 sitting in dealer inventory. that's over 15% unsold.... bet that puts a smile on the faces of some Lambo dealers
You're being far too kind. I'm sure the vast majority of those 500 unsold cars are 2010s, which means that nearly a third of this year's run is collecting dust. I'm astonished that GM built three times as many ZR1s as Z06s in 2010. I wouldn't have guessed that in a million years, even though I understand why the Grand Sport really put the squeeze on the Z06.
You learn to spot the plastic porthole on the hood. It's there so you can look at your plastic while looking at your plastic!
yeah, probably. but still....why do I NEVER see one? are all the '09's in garage-queen collections of the die hard Vette set?
I've seen that thing. Nice. The problem with this is the stock base C6 drivetrain will turn to dust or you'll never see any traction. Say I buy a 2005/06 base for $26-$27kk, I'd need a $7k SC + install. Then I need a tune and headers...for the same money I can get a used Z06 and that's a much better platform to work with IMO. It comes with the wider tires, better brakes and a lighter frame. I could be wrong, but it would seem this is the best way to go. RMX
I wonder the same thing. Last week I saw my very first ZR1, but it was sitting on a Chevy lot on the preowned side.
High 60s to mid 70s was the list - the story I had on 1995 #401 was that it was one of the last cars (last 50, next to last black/black) and some doctor thought it would be a collector item. Dealer saw him coming. I bought it in 2000 for mid-40s with 15K miles, sold it in 2009 with 37K miles for mid-20s. There are still dozens if not hundreds of C4 ZR-1s out there with 200-300 delivery miles wrapped up in plastic - the work of original/later owner speculators. I too had a regular C4 (and later a C5 Z06) at the same time. I still think the C4 ZR-1 was an underrated and excellent car - far better car than the C5 Z06 IMHO. Too bad people did not drive them more. I suspect that this new ZR1 is going to probably follow the same pattern. And hope that people will just drive the darned things this time out.
