Only in hindsight is every accident avoidable. What a classy family! Sincere condolences again to them.

Jules reminded me of De Angelis, a hugely talented driver, quiet, educated, polite, from a wealthy family, everyone seemed to like him....on his way to f.1 he beat guys like Ricci and Bottas, to bad he never got the break others did, to bad he wasn't called to Ferrari the year before.....unfortunatly this is the ugly part of the sport we all love, and i'm afraid this won't be the last time we cry for another of our heros...car racing will always be a dangerous sport.....rest in peace Jules

I agree. And absolutely...how his family dealt with the whole situation from day 1 is amazing, especially in such a situation. Pure class. I'm sure I'm using the wrong words here.

Sorry retiring numbers is silly. The best way to honor Bianchi is to fix the cause of his death.

Just as well this is a new idea as if they had done this from 1950 there would be few numbers left ...

Numbers should still relate to your position in last years WDC IMO.

yeah, because a bazillion of F1 drivers have died since 1950, very few numbers would be left. I guess we could start using a hexadecimal numbering system... 😏

The point is that most people choose a lucky number within the first 100 numbers. By now over 50 F1 drivers have died in accidents. So if we had this indvidual number system (which I find silly to begin with) in place since the fifties half the numbers for future generation of drivers would already be gone.

In 1982, after Gilles death, Enzo Ferrari asked the FIA to remove the 27 but they refused to do so....i think that to have had the chance of watching "his number" being driven by the likes of Ayrton and Alesi reminded many of us of him, so perhaps it wasn't such a bad thing after all....but i understand the hommage and i think it's a nice gesture.....

Well this wasn't in effect back then, and I don't think we're gonna lose 99 more F1 drivers in the next 65 years, so I highly doubt we're gonna run out of numbers anytime soon.

What if they start retiring a number when the driver retires?
