Report: Watkins Glen, Day 2

Today was much better than yesterday. I did not spin and John discovered first hand what it means when people say that a Spider is not as rigid as a car with fixed roof.

The day began with Fishbulb on jack stands. Late in the day yesterday, I blew a CV-Joint boot. The grease spray resulted in a bit of a mess and lots and lots of black smoke pouring out the back of the car. $200 later and Classic Coach had me all fixed up -- replaced both boots over night and I was ready to go on the AM. And go I did. John timed me at 2:35 -- not really pushing it, but at a nice hustle. Of course that's on street tires...

John made some great, great improvement today. Both instructors gave him high praise and, for the first time, he came back into the pits and his calipers were hot. Not warm. Hot. We're all very proud. After a few laps and some solid runs, he noticed the back end getting a bit twisty on heavy braking into turn 1, the bus stop, the boot, and turn 10... and the car not being stable under hard acceleration coming out of turns. He's pushinng it, driving very consistently and smoothly -- and more quickly.

Of course, Watkin's Glen is an old school town and if they catch you speeding, they throw you into the stocks...
