Previous owners doing 'previous owner things' I guess. Someone scraped off the steering column tag - lord knows why. Regardless, does anyone repro these tags? I have this taken apart to clean up the turn signal contacts - in case you were wondering why it's all taken apart. Thank you!

I think you should be able to order them through a dealer.

Seems strange to want to scratch out the chassis number from that plate

It could be innocent, and simply a case that someone has replaced their steering column cover with a second hand one, due to damaging the original cover somehow, and wanted to remove the previous cars chassis number (and then glued their own chassis plate back on top)

By the same token, it could be something more concerning, with someone trying to hide the true identity of the car in the past.

If you haven't done it already, I'd be carrying out some checks on the chassis number, seeing if the the stamped chassis number in the engine compartment looks correct, with no signs of having been messed around with at some time, and make sure everything matches okay (I'd also try to see if there's any way of reading the defaced chassis number and check on that number too)

The last thing you want is to have a car with a dubious past, that may turn out to have been stolen or written off in the past and given a fake identity.

They made a mess removing it. I know at one time T Rutlands had many of those covers from parted out cars. It really easy to remove the plate. Done it a number of times.
I do not think Ferrari supplied the VIN plate for that location but it does not hurt to ask.
I think anyone who does laser engraving could make one.

Actually I was wrong. I just looked it up and the plate has a part number. Not sure Ferrari offers to put your number on it however.

Thanks all, the stamped VIN number etc and documentation (every piece of paper back to importation in 1985) all match up on this car, the steering column tag is the only funny business.

This car had a lot of security stuff installed - reeked of paranoia - sirens, two alarms, angle switches, multiple door lock actuators, etc.. Maybe they scratched off the plate so nobody could see the chassis number by looking through the windshield, who knows.

I didn't think to check the parts diagram, thanks for that tip Brian. I'll see if any blanks are out there and then have it engraved. Or not worry about it - it's not a concourse car.
    Cheers

Well, it seems this is part number 120435 (my car is a GTS). One is listed on eBay and some others at Eurospares and All Ferrari Parts. I'll look into it / order one for 28 bucks and post back here with the result. Thanks again for the comments!

Quick update here, Maranello Classic parts had this to say:

"unfortunatly we are unable to supply part number 120435 x1 this is due to security process put in place by Ferrari to protect the integrity of the vehicles.
Please contact your local authorised Ferrari dealer with proof of ownership and photo ID."

I'm in the process of flipping my title to my MT LLC and will go to Ferrari once that is complete (and will post the followup here for posterity's sake).
    Thanks
    Mike

    Good day Mike,

Depending on how that goes and the length of time to get a replacement, you could simply 3D print a replica plate with your chassis number until the official one arrives. These days you can get items 3D printed in all sorts of materials including metal for a very reasonable price. The real effort is creating the 3D model... which should not be too tough if you know someone with the appropriate CAD tools and skills.

    Cheers,

    Sam
