I'm looking at a beautiful 99 355 spyder F1 and the owner tells me that they tried to put a "chip" in the car, and the check engine light comes on occasionally. What is the best way to correct this problem? Reprogram the ecu or replace it? Also, roughly how much will this cost??? Or any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I would try pulling a few codes first before looking into an ECU. It might not be from the "chip".

The programming may not be the issue. In fact, if it was done by a reputable shop, it should be fine, unless they did something that flumoxes the smog controls. More likely it is something else. Must check the codes.

You cant chip the 5.2 without running into all sorts of problems. Hopefully you have the old chip and you can remove the existing one and reinstall the original.

Can you pull the codes, even if the CEL isn't on?
