My 400A is about a year from new paint. There's a small hole, and decay visible beneath it, on top windshield. Is there something I can use for a patch, until next year, or is this advisable at all.

Most silicone is corrosive to metal and most likely wouldnt bond to the other sealant anyway. Its most likely butyl rubber if its original. Butyl is very black and always soft and sticky, stringy, whereas the polyurethane would firm up and not be pliable. I would try sealing it with the same material if at all possible. My winshield was installed by a hack shop out east with black silicone. What a fricken mess.

Interesting, in the glazing business silicone sealants are recomended by glass and aluminum manufactures for use with both aluminum and glass substrates for sealing. See websites for GE Sealants, Tremco, and Dow Corning. In addition Polyurethane is suggested for aluminum and glass joints and is submursible. sp I do agree that Butyl is the most used sealant for windshield installation, however silicone is also at the top of the list. Check out Tremco Spectrum 2, with its ten year warranty.

Again, use some silicone sealer to patch the hole. You probably already have some around the house.
