I have been recently to Maranello to do some research about Ferrari Dino. Regarding the headlamp covers I was quite keen to find out what is actually fact.
Regarding the 246 GTS US-Modell #04234 delivered with "protezioni in plastica" it is to say, that is option has nothing to do with headlamp covers. It´s an option, that came only with deliveries to the USA. This option is a protection for the car, to reduce risk of damage during shipping to the States.
I met some expierenced guys who worked at Ferrari and Scaglietti in the early 70ies and all told me no headlamp covers were fitted with Ferrari Dinos 206/246 GT/GTS in the factory. One reason was bad expierence with Ferrari 275 GTB in the past.
    Regards Matthias

The plastic protection is seen in several vintage factory photos and generally covering the bumper areas.

As for the headlight covers themselves, the 206 prototypes tested with covers in place.

correct Shawn, only tested on prototypes, no fitting on production cars at the factory, fittings have been done by importer or dealerships only

Seeing as most cars that had them "in period" received the Maranello Concessionaires, it makes me wonder what caused them to install them, other than what was perceived as a cosmetic upgrade. Any idea where they got them from or who made them? Was is Ferrari?

Did you find out any other super secret info?

    Unlikely it was Ferrari....
Nose bars were fitted at the factory in very few cases. It seems some have been fitted at the factory and some with dealerships. Makes sence, as we found different versions...

Any idea what the "factory" nose bars look like? My 1974 GTS came with a nose bar that has a cross section like an air foil instead of just round tubing.

Please post a picture of your nose bar. The picture attached shows a nose bar which could be a factory fitted one.

I always thought it ironic that Great Britain, with its large amounts of rainfall and high humidity, has the largest number of headlamp-cover Dinos. When I got mine in 1999, Brenda Vernor in Maranello called Maranello Concessionaires searching for them. They, in turn, referred her to Egidio Brandoli outside Maranello, from whom I ultimately purchased them. Fred

We've seen a North American Dino sold recently, that showed the covers as an option, and shipped loose in the car???

They were illegal to mount, at the time....

Just bought a set from Superformance and Colin said that they are the ones F. sells.
The brackets are really nice and were copied from an "original installation". Really clean set up, and even if anyone thinks it is not kosher, I think it is great as you only drill one hole for the front screw. The rear brackets, are mounted behind the headlamp. Have not yet put it against the car, but will one of these days...
    Regards, Alberto
