Some of my family will be spending my birthday weekend (and that of my siblings) next weekend, all of us converging on DC as a central location.

We'll be there for 2 nights and are staying at the Mayflower at Connecticut between M & L.

I'm looking for restaurant suggestions in that general area but was looking specifically for a churrascaria. The only one I see is Fogo de Chao. I've never been to one before...anyone here been to one? Better than Texas de Brazil?

Any other suggestions in that immediate area for steak? Morton's is right there but I can eat that anywhere...would rather try something better and local.

Any out-of-this-world Italian on that block?

    Thanks in advance.

I've never eaten at fogo de Chao but I hear it's very good though pricey. We have Chima in Tysons which is execellent and cheaper. As far as italian downtown there is an old standby iRicchi (northern italian) and Ristorante Tosca 1112 F St., NW The latter is amazing if you can get a table. Good luck and happy birthday!

Marc- I highly recommend Kincaids at 2000 Pennsylvania Avenue, not too far from the White House. Have eaten there a dozen or more times and the service and food were always exemplary. You will enjoy yourself immensely and stand the chance of seeing someone famous. Make sure and get a reservation.

If you are in the Rosslyn area, the Tivoli Restaurant above the Rosslyn Metro Station is one of my all-time favorites. If you go, ask for Tony and order the pistachio crusted grouper if you like fish. Not always on the menu, but always available. Tell Tony Terry said hello. Again, you will nearly always see a senator or administration official there. Once more, reservations are recommended.

For excellent Italian, Tosca is great as mentioned previously, ask for Aldo(mngr) is a very good friend mine. Also another friend of mine Mario runs Teatro Goldoni also on K st. If you choose either, mention you are a friend of Domenico. They are excellent restaurants and very good when it comes to service.
    pm me if you like.

    Ciao

They have Fogo's in Atlanta. Been there a few times. Very good if you love meat. Fun experience and great food.

I went to Fogo de Chao in Sao Paulo a few months back. It was Excellent! ~ 2weeks ago I was in DC and went to "DC Coast Restaurant". It was very good - great desserts, but I'd have gone to Fogo had I known. I think the desserts at Fogo pale in comparison to the main courses. IMHO :)

First off, you're staying at one of the top probably 3 places in DC to stay. It might be the best (Mayflower, 4 seasons, Willard) of the bunch.

I think if you are going out with a bunch that you should try out Clydes for one of your meals. They have tons of different restaurants. I love the Clydes in Chinatown http://www.clydes.com/main/index.cfm

There is also "Legal Seafood" and this place is equally good. Lots of good seafood and non-seafood meals to be had.

The Cafe Promenade in the Mayflower itself it unreal.

Theres 3 solid suggestions. I used to live very close to all that and LOVED IT!

Fogo De Chao is fantastic. You can't go wrong. Compared to other steakhouses, where everything is a la carte, it's actually very reasonable.

Just be VERY VERY hungry because you will have more prime steak than you can imagine!

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I've got us at Fogo for Sat. night.

Still working on where to go for Fri.

We'll have a group of 10 people plus one 2-year-old which can complicate things a bit! haha

OK, so I think what the family wants to do on the Friday night is to eat Italian (Southern w/ a fat Italian guy cooking and another one taking your order, meatballs and pasta and all that...old school, not snooty or trendy) and to do so within a short walking distance of the Mayflower since there'll be a baby stroller, people just drove from Philly, NJ, NC, etc.

I see that I Ricchi is nearby and that fits the distance part of the crieteria...

Should I go to any one of the following instead of I Ricchi?

    Spezie
    Vapiano
    Sesto Senso
    Giovanni's Trattu
    Nooshi

I just got them off online yellow pages as being within 0.2 of the hotel so one of them could be a Pizzeria for all I know :)

If not, I'll try for I Ricchi.

I would avoid fogo, simply because its a common restaurant. I would go to a local restaurant that is nationally acclaimed. I'm sure one wouldn't be too difficult to find in D.C.

I enjoyed Fogo de Chao in Chicago, but don't believe I would ever go back or visit another one. None of the meats were available anywhere near as rare as I prefer and everything seemed a bit over seasoned. Nice little lamb chops though - just wish I could have been the one to cook them.
