Alfreds is great! There are so much good places around Union Square and North Beach. Are you looking for other types of food or just steak houses?

There's Rubicon on Sacramento behind the Wells Fargo building. It's owned by Robert De Niro. Good Californian style food. Good wine list.

You can do Asia De Cuba at the Clift Hotel.

Kokkari is really good too - The lamb chops are a must have. It's on Jackson St. Very good wine list.

Next to Kokkari is Frisson - another good spot. It's also a nice place to people watch. Might even run into some celebs.

Another good resto is Myth on Pacific - it's a block away from Frisson and is also very good.

    Hope this helps.

Le Colonial on Cosmo Place (near Taylor and Geary) is a great French-Vietnamese place. Hard to find, very good food and great ambience.

My favorite restaurant in SF (and the entire West Coast) is Slanted Door (Viet fusion) in the Ferry Building.

I personally like Le Colonial better than Slanted Door, but that's probably just a matter of indvidual tastes. Also, If you can get a table, Michael Mina is pretty darned good.

Reservation is extremely hard to get at Slanted Door. I managed to get a spot for Mother's day. It'll be my first time there. I think prices at Slanted Door is about 1/2 of Le Colonial right? I have a 5 people so would like to keep it reasonable especially since I'm buying a pearl necklace as well for mom.

I have to second some of those listed above but let's not forget:

    The Fifth Floor
    Campton Place
    Gary Danko
    Farallon
    Fringale
    Hawthorne Lane
    Lulu
    Plumbjack
    Zuni Cafe

This is not a complete list but it should keep you busy for a while.

Boulevard has become way overrated. Used to be a fantastic restaurant, with a fantastic pastry chef. Now it's just pricey, with pretty good food and above average service.

Hummmm. Taking Mom there in a few weeks, I'll report back. There are way to many great restaurants in SF to put up with bad service. Thanks for the heads up.

I agree that Boulevard is good, but it is definately not worth every penny spent there. My girlfriend works at LuLu so I eat there quite often. Food is pretty good, don't know if I'd eat there though if I didn't get a fat discount.

Trying to get a job at Slanted Door or Frisson as we speak.

Another vietnamese fusion place thats good is also Ana Mandara right next to Giradelli Square.

Mangarosa is also pretty good, its in North Beach and serve Italian food with a twist of Brazilian.

If you have the money and can make a reservation. Gary Dank or Michael Mina is definately top notch. Food is GREAT and service is on par too. However if you have time to travel, might as try and get a reservation at French Laundry.
