I am in the process of restoring a 1978 308 GTS and have a few basic questions.Where do I buy all of the rubber weather stripping? Who restores wheels or do I just have a body shop sandblast and painted? How do I know that the timing belts need changing (25,000 miles)? The car is currently red over black, but after research I found that it was originally silver, red. Does this make any difference? Thanks for any help.
Take a good look in the 308 section for answers to these and any other questions you come up with The timing belts need changing after 3-5 years of use - it sounds like you have no records in which case do them now Which color do you prefer - its your car Good luck with the project
Welcome to Fchat and good on you for taking on the challenge of restoring a 308. I too have a '78 308 and have done a lot of work to mine. There are several threads (as mentioned above) in the 308 section just down the page from here. The one you probably want to start with is here... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157187 There are several links to threads there that cover where to buy parts, how to find things etc. Check them out and let us know if you don't find the answer to a question in the 308 section. Oh, and post some pics of your car so we can see where you are starting from!! John
I think reoriginals has the weather striping. Wurth makes a silver wheel paint, i have used it on Mercedes before it looks like the same color if I remember. Larry
When did Ferrari stop using magnesium wheels? Are GTB and GTS wheels aluminum? Just a heads-up that restoring magnesium wheels is not as simple as blasting and painting them, but aluminum generally is. Do a search on magnesium wheels before digging into yours to be sure.
Don't strip the wheels, only have them scuffed, cleaned up and then painted. They are magnesium, and it is very difficult to get them sealed properly after stripping, and the paint will "alligator" and crack bad after 6 to 12 months. Seen it many times, and several here have taken their wheels back repeatedly trying to get proper results. Safest to simply scuff them up and repaint.
