If anyone comes across a 308 builder suitable for a track car, please keep me informed. I've found a few but too far gone. I'm in the process of selling off my last xjs and its spares. I have decided to concentrate on a 308 but not so much on the gt4 as i already have a gtb and have already begun to collect spares. Preferably something complete and running. Thank you.

Sheenan has a complete racer for sale. Very good money in my opinion, if I take the exchange-rates in considiration my Alfa Romeo GTJ racer has cost more to build.... A 308 build good will take much more than this.

Thanks......i know its far more cost effective to buy a ready built car.......but for me.......building and engineering it myself is most of the satisfaction of owning a track car.

Thanks i'm going to check it out! I've missed a few ops because i couldn't get to them. Been finding them in the 15/17k range. I don't think thats going to change for awhile, so i am trying not to be too anxious.

Heres the deal. I've been getting pms so i will clarify. If i buy a referal, i will give the xjs as a finders fee. (need the room anyway) but i'm not shipping it out. You come drive it off or handle the shipping yourself. If would be easy enough for anyone to verify if i purchased the referal. thanks

Yes, there are MANY desperate sellers in the market right now, so bargain hard. $15k should be max imho for a typical track rat builder provided the engine and tranny are in ok order. FYI: i did along the lines of you and modded a 308 for tracking. While not cheap, am sure you have access to CNC and other machines to manufaturer parts as needed.

Actually i was hoping for around 15k or less. I've missed a few already. i want a 2v car. Down the road, i plan on machining my own heads out of billet. I guess that would put me into an open class if i do run?

You need to talk to Steven. He can tell you any and everything about turning a 308 into a track car.

As an aside--that XJS is wild. Certainly a unique track car.

This one is my street car, these cars have alot of power but they are quite big and heavy. This one has an automatic. The others had BMW ZF. You have to build everything for them including body parts. My next step was to build a twin cam v12, had all the parts, but i rather put my time into an F-car. Many pros and cons. I've always admired the Jag racing heritage, but it doesn't compare to ferrari. It is interesting how you can see the racing influence built into these car, both Jag and Ferrari. Little engineering nuances only a race engineer would apply. Some real subtle but there.

Sean "Luckydynes" was looking to partner with someone on a 308 2v race car...he offered to supply engines to anyone who actually raced one in a sanctioned class as I recall. PM him.

Good luck on finding a running 308 for under $15,000 - even in this economy!

This thread has caught my attention. I have posted here only a couple times and I am a relative new to the Ferrari scene. Like the OP I have been tinkering with other makes, mostly Porsche's, but many other makes in between. I would definitely fall into the "Euro hot rodder" category of car owners type. I have built a 914 into a 914/6, built a 911 track car, ect, so projects don't scare me. Right now I am in the middle of saving a BMW E30 M3 and turning it from a riced out bomb of a disaster into a proper road going BMW, with some special goodies include a 6 cly motor. I am well known, maybe well is not the term to use, for starting a new project as soon as one is finished and I am looking ahead a little bit to past the completion of the M3. And I now have my eyes on a 328 or 308. Long story short a project does not scare me.

Like the original poster I would be looking for a car that would see some track use (just DE's and Auto-x), not a dedicated track car though, so it would also so some road use. I have been keeping my eye on Ebay the last couple months trying to get a feel for the market and what is out there. I have not found much though, it seems that almost every Ferrari out there (or at least the owner is under the impression) that every car is perfect or near perfect and therefore commands a near perfect price. Basically I went a runner but other then that I am not concerned with the fit and finish of the interior and body, originality, ect, and as always cheaper is better. Basically I want a tinkering toy not an untouchable piece of an art. This is where you guys come in. From reading this thread these cars do seem to be out there somewhere. Where is the best place to look for a car that fits this bill? Also what can I expect the market to look like on these cars? I see the OP found something similar as to what I am looking for $15k. I am not necessarily looking for something that cheap, again I am just trying to get a feel for the market. I am leaning a little more towards a 328 than 308 and was wondering what kind of price I should expect for something that might fit my bill. Feel free to throw in your 2 cents too. Thanks!

Ahh ok, and yes a 2V should be cheaper still as i was referrinf to a QV. Of course the carb'ed cars are better if you want power versus the FI examples.

Depoends on th sanctioning body, check their rule books and differen bodies have various classes and set rules you need to abide by. As you know, paying attention to suspension tuning (and to some extent gearing if you do drop gears) will really be key to winning road course racing versus a mere 10 'extra' hp/tq.

<Blushing> Well, i did make a small fortune... starting with a much larger one. For those unfamilair, have a site at www.EnjoyTheTrack.com . Also have one called www.FerrariTweaks.com yet lost interest in it so she flounders.

The're out there......passed up 2 gtb this month in the 15k, one for 17k all nice cars with issues and a product of economic times. Not to mention a hand full of mondials for under 15k. I know of a carb'd 308 with all the spares to build into 288 i believe with turbos and transaxle for 25k. I didn't have the heart to cut these cars up as they were too "nice" for a track car. Left them for another anxious new owner. Hopefully i have now been directed to a car. It may also be too nice, in that case, i will buy to build an open class street/track car. I've been racing for 30+ years from outlaw sprints to can-am, i've learned to be patient. Good luck to you. Side note, buying the car is the cheapest part of the whole venture, i've raced porsche, BMW and Jag. Parts are readily available and cheap for them, barring Jag. I've had to hand build and out source everything for my ferrari but i have friend in the racing industry.

FerrariChat is the greatest......thanks to the member that located the car from me. The owner was very nice and into ferraris. Looking forward to taking delivery. Red/Blk GTBi same year as my Blk/Blk GTBi. 15'000 miles documented, registered at the factory, custom exhaust, good paint, factory 16' wheels, 10k cash. This car is too nice to make into a track car, its going to be my daily driver.

Congrats! Sounds like a whale of a deal. Hopefully as soon as I get to the point where I am ready to start my project I can find a similar deal, it seems like what you were finding would fit my bill perfectly. Thanks for the pointers too.

CONGRATS! They make very good daily drivers. Took the example that was here food shopping, to the mall... pretty much everywhere. Racked up around 30k miles in 3 years (and i live in the harsh snowy mtns of New England). First thing i'd check and probably replace for the heck of it would be ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL (get the point) fuel and oil 'soft' lines. Also check 'soft' brake lines and replace with steel braided items from Goodridge or the like.

If you are really retentive yet is a a good idea as they are only $20 each, is first to know the age of fluids, then send fluid samples to Spectrum Lab or the like and get fluid analysis of the engine oil (at 3k miles total life), tranny oil (after a year from new), and coolant fluid (after a year of use). Of course you can send samples sooner, your call. Oil analysis helped me 'discover' that Mobil 1 0W-40 change formulas about three years ago and wound up at that time after they changed their formula to NOT being good for my use.

Hope this helps. And DO track her... even with the relatively very pronounced understeer of the stock car she can be fun. Watch out for the snappy rear end as she can be unforgiving if you make an input mistake midcorner.

Well the car is getting loaded on the transport tomorrow. Excited to see what she looks like. Only seen a photo that accompanied the title. PO said he put a new bat and air up all the tires. Fired right up, but didn't drive it as it had not left his garage in 4 years and he was concerned about hoses and such. Last time she drove was to the F1 race in indy 05. Have ordered everything for a full service so i will be ready when she gets here. I will post pics of the car on arrival and give you some information on the PO. Somewhat of a legend in the racing field. From what i can gather about this car is that it is far too nice to track so i plan to restore and keep it as a stable mate to my others. Not going to think about racing for awhile unless i buy the burned one i found.

I actually have some pictures of the $9500 "burned out" 308 you referenced earlier. That guy is quite the character. It is pretty rough. A lot of work to get it on the track, and an unimaginable amount of work to get it on the street, but let me know if you want me to send you the pictures.
