No need to apologize - but I didn't say Chicago is Paris I said it would be nice to have a similar event set in a large, cosmopolitan city... While no where on Earth is Paris (except, well you know, actual Paris), the options for cities in the US that could capture some of that same je ne sais quoi are limited; probably in varying degrees to NYC, Chicago & Boston... What we don't need is another US event hosted at a golf course, so if there is going to be a Retromobile USA, I'd prefer it to be similar to the one-and-only original.
I actually thought of New Orleans, went three times 2000-2002, really liked the old world vibe and the food so it has a bit of a link to Paris via its history but does it have the infrastucture? Also this is an indoor show so why do it that far south...and is it easy to get to? Not sure about that. Reputation is half the battle and Detroit's is not good sorry. Montreal is not the US of course.... I think this should be an east coast event, culturally it makes sense, and located north east...
Marc respectfully, you are missing the point. This "thing" isn't going happen anyway.... Culturally, it should remain in France,....Americans just will fu*k it up, oui?
Announcement, press conference, coming tuesday evening or wednesday at Retromobile Paris, no point in further talk till then. It could work or it could fail of course.
My opinion, leave it be… no need to bring it here… go to Paris and in enjoy it …I’ve attended every year since 2010 sometimes things are better left as is…I’ve watched the show change, some years better than others, but you can’t beat Paris….I’ll be there next week…. Paris in February is a great time to visit….just saying
And to be honest, what vendors are flying here w parts, memorabilia, etc. they already complain about the price to exhibit in Paris…. Great idea in theory but totally different in reality. Just my thoughts.
The USA, will never make it as Rétromobile, here you have Hershey, et al. That is the reason, Hershey will never work in France, or any European country, or worse, Barrett Jackson. SEMA? Only Vegas. You could even try Goodwood here, at the Reno Air races location. Nope, it will never work. The mood, is what sets the event, not the town, and this country is way too big. That is why some things, cannot be moved from location to location just because of wishful thinking. What sets off Americans, is the being at odds in multilingual environments. Rétromobile, without speaking French? Not so easy. Try Essen, in German? This, as it is very difficult for a European, non English speaking attendee, make a pilgrimage to Hershey, one of the world's top notch event, if ever there has been one. Where would you have PB? Impossible. Tradition, as an old man used to fiddle, on top of a roof. Regards, Alberto
Absolutely. Vegas is an exercise in bad taste. A famous photographer, whose name I cannot recall at the moment, said it to me best about Vegas, "everything there is 100% fake" New York surrounding area would be best, but in the city would be a nightmare.
I would think that Monterey, CA during Car Week would be best. Anyone, who is anyone is already there, T-Rutlands has a base there, and there are a lot of Ferraris there. I don't think there are many Ferraris in New Orleans.
Arguably Car Week in Monterey is like Retromobile spread out over time and space? It would be nice to have a central venue for exhibitors and vendors. Too much time and aggro is expended driving to/from the dozens of events on the peninsula and beyond.
Monterey has already become a nightmare attendance and circulation wise. What, add a few 10K more people, would render it impossible and impassable. All you got is a few one lane roads that serve the community during the year. Ask them, and see what they will say. Powerful people in PB. Really powerful. T-Rutlands will not make THE difference. I would never go to PB again, only if it were Del Monte, red carpet, and white gloves. I did once and it was tops. Will not happen again, so bye PB. Ft. Ord might be an option, but doubt the Army would re-commission it, and of course, la 'belle vie' of the old Fort, is just like Paris. Regards, Alberto
As an (past) organizer I ran the Cars on 5th in Naples for a dozen years. It started off small but now it’s held for 40000 fans in early February. The 4 day weekend starts this Thursday. I recognize it’s not the same as Retromobile. But the venue in beautiful Naples on a gorgeous day it’s an amazing show. With over 700 cars on display if you never have witnessed it you are missing something special. My point is that to organize such an amazing event is not for the faint of heart. It involves months of planning and hard work by the many people who pull in together. I hope the US version of the Retromobile comes together.
Organizers told me today: Retromobile USA will be in New York in 2026 at end of the year very interesting Ken Goldman
Oops, 19 - 22 November 2026 it is https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFtBLImKvQV/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
So the weekend before Thanksgiving...interesting choice. But since that is 2 months before the real show, these vendors will be all American-based presumably and just using the Retromobile name only, yes? I can't imagine the same European-based vendors coming to the US and then doing it all again in Feb.
