The fact that this concept is even being discussed is a comment on the dissatisfaction with current F1, no?

Well then, get the molds for the typo 043 of 1994 from Ferrari and get churning them out.

Yeah it was tried before and folded quick, probably because it was not well funded and/or not sanctioned by F1. It might have some teething problems at first, getting the old drivers interested/conditioned, but there is no reason why it could not be as successful as the Senior PGA tour.

So...which would potentially be the fastest? I think the 2004 spec cars, even with grooved tyres...

Yeah. They would dust a current F1 car with ease.

It's all pie in the sky and isn't going to happen!

The number of "star" drivers who would be interested in doing it would be too small, and nobody really wants to see a bunch of also-rans whom they can barely remember tootling round the circuits.

And lets be honest here, how many of those old drivers could fit in the old cars comfortably for a race distance? (even if it is only a percentage of a full GP). Going up the hill at Goodwood is one thing, but trying to do lap after lap racing with other cars is something else!

Then there's all the travelling around the World if it's supposed to be a support race for the modern Grand Prix, as is being suggested - How many of those old drivers fancy having to do back to back weekend races, with all the jet lag involved?

As has already been pointed out, a very similar idea has already been tried in the past with the Grand Prix Masters series and it was a flop! Plenty of "star" drivers expressed an interest in racing in the series initially, but when asked to commit and actually turn up to race, hardly any did! They then had to fill the grid with also-rans and drivers who had never even competed in F1.

The reasons given for not racing in the series included:

Not having the time to dedicate to the series properly.
Not wishing to risk serious injury any more.
Not being able to get comfortable in the car.
Having other interests now that are more important than racing.
Not wanting to have to travel all over the World and live in hotels any more.

    Amongst other reasons.

Lets be realistic here, this whole story is nothing more than Bernie making a vain threat that he would run a series with "proper", noisy F1 cars with "genuine" star drivers on the same tracks as the modern, "quiet" cars with their "I drive in F1 because I've got money" pay drivers, in order to get what he wants - namely: louder cars in modern F1.

The threat works on the principal that if fans were to watch the old V10 cars racing round, making loads of noise and sending massive vibrations through the spectators, prior to the modern F1 race, then they would be even more disappointed with how the modern F1 cars sound and the FIA would be embarrassed by how puny their modern cars appeared to be.

The problem for Bernie though, is that history has already shown that this sort of series doesn't work due to a lack of support from the numbers of suitable drivers required to compete and so it's too easy for the FIA to call his bluff.

If the old drivers won't/can't drive why not put in current F1 third stringers i.e. test drivers from the teams (in the old cars) to fill the grid, going up against some wily veterans. Since this proposed series runs during GP weekends they're on site, they get seat time on track, a chance to shine (hopefully not crash), their sponsors get some screen time. All good.

    All good?

No it's not, for the exact reason I stated!

The last thing the FIA want is to have their nice, new modern F1 cars made to look puny and quiet by the old cars!

For the fans, seeing the V6 Turbo's after the V10's would be a massive anti-climax!, and that's why Bernie is broaching the idea of having them at all of the Grand Prix's, to get what he wants: Louder cars!

As I say, it's never going to happen!

    Is this your point?

Couldn't a compromise be worked out?
