Today we departed Mendocino and traveled to Sonoma down Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway. This curvy road offers spectacular ocean views! Car is running well. Image Unavailable, Please Login Last night we stayed at the Heritage House, where the movie Same Time Next Year was filmed. Again, the views were spectacular.
Today was a rest day and we drove our cars to the Keller collection. This is a very private collection of around 300 cars grouped into 5 buildings (Italian, American, French, German and British). The buildings themselves are a work of art. This is my fifth time viewing this collection and it never ceases to amaze me. It is less about the number of cars and more about the restoration quality and their historical significance. The Mercedes Benz collection is over the top! They also have a winery at the site and we had lunch there. Photos of the cars in the collection are not allowed. Arturo Keller passed away last year. He was originally from Mexico. His family now maintains the collection. Ivan
I had a friend, fellow Bora owner, who was a member of The Candy Store https://candystoreclub.com/ and they visited his place 10-15 years ago and the description of his collection was amazing.
Only Maserati I saw was a A6G 2000 Allemano coupe in an elegant grey color. Many high end Ferraris (California spyder, Superameica, 250 PF1 cab, etc) and many more really nice early Alfa Romeo. One of them I recognized as it was the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B which won Best of Show at this year's Amelia Island Concours. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Arturo Keller, the international well known collector left Mexico since his 1st wife and his daughter had been murdered there. He settled in the US with his 2nd wife and build up a very remarkable private car collection. The collection is handled by a US curator. I met Arturo twice at Retromobile in Paris. He was a true enthusiast. Unfortunately, he passed away 3 (?) years ago.
Arturo Keller passed away February 2024. Fortunately his daughter Ana is an avid car enthusiast and continues his legacy.
I made it to the Pebble Beach Lodge! This was a bit of a risky move as I had only driven this car about 50 miles before taken on this 1,600 mile trip. This marks the end of the PB Motoring Classic. Tomorrow we get to drive the Tour d’Elegance with about 80% of the show cars that will be on the lawn on Sunday. It is a 65 mile drive along the coast and for me it is the highlight of the Pebble Beach Concours. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Congratulations Ivan! In the USA classics are driven far too little so thank you for setting a great example just before the decadent week of speculative auction overkill and multiple sterile concours filled with poseurs and influencers. A week during which sadly only a tiny minority attend the historic races at Laguna Seca...if they even know about them. Enjoy the coastal tour.
Today we completed the Tour d'Elegance. It is a relatively slow drive for 62 miles towards Big Sur. It has great ocean views and at times rather hilly, which makes some cars overheat. To be on this tour the car has to have been invited to be on the Sunday Concours or completed the Motoring Classic. Unfortunately some show cars had not been fully sorted out, and ended on the side of the road. It is great to see so many one-off prototypes being driven. At Pebble Beach you get to see cars you had no idea even existed. I am sure in a day or so there will be plenty of YouTube videos of the Tour d'Elegance, just Google it. Today was Concorso Italiano which was well attended. There were approximately 25 Maseratis including the 1959 3500GT Vignale spyder prototype I restored years ago. It was great seeing that car again! That car won the Chairman's award and last year it won an award at Villa d'Este. Although I no longer own this car it still has my restoration and it is great to see that it is in good hands. My current Vignale won second best Maserati, first place went to an A6G Frua spyder. There were several cars that were much better restored than mine, including one that won an award at last year's Pebble Beach show. I think the judges were impressed that I actually drove my car that many miles. Now that this trip is over, according to the odometer, the total mileage was around 3,400 kilometers (2,100 miles). Not bad for its first real shake down test The car has been given to the transport company for its trip back to Georgia. Tomorrow is the Pebble Beach Concours; another long day. Congratulations Ivan!!! I knew (my ex)car would eventually make it to Concourso. Thanks to you and your amazing talent and perseverance it got 2nd. Many years in the making and bittersweet. Wish I could have been there to see it. Now maybe someday I can come and drive it finished!!!
You are always welcomed to drive your car! You thought I was crazy when I told you my plans for the car included a very long road trip. I am very happy the car performed as it did. Ivan
I assume, the red A6G-2000 Frua Spyder was #2180. That car had got a complete new body in Italy in the early 2000s.... I took photos of the original body outside the resto-shop....
Fabulous! Was thinking about how you were doing out there over the weekend, what a trip. Many congrats, well deserved
I did not have the opportunity to check the VIN. Concorso Italiano is not a serious show when it comes to judging. Judged pick the cars they like the best. Image Unavailable, Please Login The Frua spyder was a pretty car.
A 150s made it to the final four for the selection of Pebble Beach best of show. Although the Maserati did not win, being in the top four is a big deal. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Congratulations Ivan! You are getting to be a native out here in California! It as great to see you at many of the facets that make up the Monterey Madness of Car Week; The tour, Concorso, the Concours, etc..... I believe that Arturo Keller was originally from Switzerland. He had an exclusive arrangement with any & all Mercedes imported to Mexico. That white prototype 3500 Spyder, not owned by Phil White, is chalked to attend the concours in Rome. Here's a shot of me judging with Adolfo Orsi for the preservation class. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Appears the plate is 1655? Ken Miles and Shelby drove in period. There's supposedly another car claiming to be 1655, any word on authenticity of that? @wbaeumer lots of discussion on it already here: The other Maserati 150S 1655 - The Nostalgia Forum - The Autosport Forums
I have 2 photos of #1655 when it was found in Mexico in 1974. And it clearly had still the original Fantuzzi coachwork fitted. The coachwork of the 150S shown in Pebble this year has the Fiandri-coachwork. I have my own opinion about these two #1655 but I`ll keep that for me.......
